Mountain & Tidewater Songs:

Ferrante seems, in many of his works, to be quite interested in the exploration of musical time. This cycle's lydian-infused harmonies, imaginative and chromatic, help to set up an evocative musical / narrative trajectory. In some of the songs, and, one could say, for the cycle as a whole, a number of musical ideas seem to "swim backward" against a forward-moving musical current. This creates dramatic moments throughout the cycle, where the various "streams" of musical narrative collide.
