The Listener is a likeable show with equally likeable characters. Each episode is self contained with Toby using his talent to help people he encounters through his work as a paramedic. A small part of this season is Toby gradually remembering his early childhood and lost mother. I was excited to learn that a second series is in progress, and it sounds like Toby will be more deeply involved with the authorities investigating crimes - this might allow for some really interesting scenarios. Fingers crossed its popularity grows and it can keep going. The set has no extras and contains all 13 episodes. Good news for fellow Aussies - it's region 4 as well as 2.

I had never heard of this series before. Usually like Ghost Whisperer and Medium. I enjoyed 'The Listener', found it entertaining, although it is not of the same calibre as the afore mentioned series. The characters are likeable (although not wholly believable). I'm not at all disappointed that I bought Series I, not sure if I would bother to buy any more as I feel that there is only so much you can do with that sort of storyline, but Series I was enjoyable all the same.

Wasn't sure about this series initially - had been told about it by Canadian friends who recommended it. By episode 3 I was hooked so sad to find out that although it ran for several series in Canada only one is available on DVD over here. Very similar to "Perception" - so if you enjoy that series you'll probably like this. It was a cheap DVD so great value for money.

An Ambulance driver who can hear the thoughts of his patients. He eve drops on crime victims inner voices and helps the police find the perpetrator. He's got a friend/shrink who knows about his talent and has helped him cope being 'different'. He's kept the secret for years, but by the end of the series has confided in three of the main characters.
And then there's his past ..... it hangs over him like a dark cloud as he has only a few memories of his mum, and possibly a brother. By the end of the series his past starts to unfold ...... roll on Series 2.
Non offensive easy watching ....

This series has a lot of potential. The psychic aspect adds a nice twist to the usual crime story, and intrigue builds as the season progresses and Toby, the main character, starts to investigate his past. The opening episodes set the scene and introduce the characters, but the season really picks up the further you get in to it. It's such a pity that the remaining four seasons haven't been released to DVD as well.

Twenty-something paramedic Toby has a unique skill; he can hear people's thoughts - something that is not always welcome or convenient, but he is slowly learning to use it to his best advantage and to try and help the police department catch the killers etc. when they are stuck.

The beginning of the series focuses mostly on his friendship with fellow paramedic Oz, his on-and-off relationship with emergency doctor Olivia and his budding crime-solving relationship with female detective Marsh whom he keeps meeting at the different crime scenes and who reluctantly lets him help her on some of the cases.

Later in the series - although they still work on a new case per episode - focus shifts more over to Toby's mysterious past. He remembers his mother from when he was taken away from her, but all names, places and other people have vanished from his memory, so he has a difficult task ahead and it is only when a mysterious man with onsetting dementia turns up and in his few lucid moments reveals clues to how Toby might find his lost family.

I wasn't impressed for the first couple of episodes as I found the acting and storylines slightly dodgy, but it does get better - just don't expect too much.

Here is a quick intro to the 13 episodes in the first series:
1/ A kid is kidnapped from a car, but the mother refuses to tell the authorities about it fearing for his life.
2/ A suspicious explosion rocks an apartment block and Toby's old friend is accused of causing the blow as he is a former addict
3/ A homeless boy knows the whereabouts of a missing teenager
4/ Toby meets a girl on a night out and they have great chemistry - unfortunately she is found dead the following day and Toby is the main suspect.

This is a well produced programme, clear pictured, steady story lines and a crisp quality to the overall production. The actors are very good and as we have come to expect, it oozes a lavish budget which makes for good viewing. Where can one go with a plot like this? To be honest not far, but at least it makes for good light vieiwng and is well worth taking a look as one can enjoy the quality of the production and this makes the possibility of enjoying the plots in each episode so much easier, eventhough they may be a little predictable at times. Put it this way, EastEnders and Corrie are still being watched by the masses, so what does that tell you? so to view these type of shows gives one a glimpse of how a plot, acting and production should really be done. Overall? a very enjoyable show.
