Suffering from the 'more is less' phenomenon of final book adaptations, splitting Mockingjay in half has produced an interesting anomaly. I haven' seen Part 2 yet, but 1 is a very slow burner. That's not a bad thing as it establishes the characters well, and allows some time to be spent on all the issues alluded to by others - media manipulation by the ruling class etc. But it does go on a bit. The first half in particular is very slow.
Overall I found Jennifer Lawrence's performance irritating - lots of views of her anguished pale face surrounded by dark hair, and disbelieving looks at what Snow has done to her boyfriend. That seemed excessive given that both parties were participating in a media war.
Philip Seymour Hoffman and Julianna Moore supported well as the main perpetrators of the Level 13 response.
Ah well let's see how it gets wrapped up in Part 2.

The third instalment on The Hunger Games, Mockingjay Part 1 picks up where the last film left of and soon gets into its stride. Katniss is initially unwilling to become the iconic face of the rebellion, but her mind is changed as both sides in the conflict attempt to use propaganda and military action to further their causes, the latter providing this film with some impressive and enthralling sequences complimented by great effects.

The acting is very strong and it's nice to see a dedication to the late Philip Seymour Hoffman at the end of the film. The plot is well-paced and the storyline gripping as the movie evolves from the games of the previous films and into a stark reality where Katniss is not only fighting for her survival, but for the survival of all the people she loves and the rebellion itself.

Though the idea of a less equipped rebellion fighting against a much more powerful imperialistic power is common to many films, The Hunger Games in general and Mockingjay Part 1 in particular still manages to stand out and show it's difference, not least in the use of a strong female lead. The mind games being played by Snow and the plot elements relating to Peeta are especially intriguing.

Essentially, this movie has a strong script, features sterling performances and looks fantastic. In relation to Katniss, Plutarch Heavensbee says, 'she's worth the risk' and in relation to this film I say, 'it's worth every penny.'

Just because the final book in Suzanne Collins' Hunger Games trilogy has been split into two movies doesn't mean there's any letting up in the tension as opposition slowly grows to the tyrannical Panem President Snow (Sutherland).
Katniss (Lawrence) - after making her escape from her final Hunger Game - is now billeted deep underground in the gloomy catacombs of District 13 and exhorted by rebel president Alma Coin (Moore) to become a propagandist poster girl, rallying supporters in the other districts to rise up against Snow's Capitol HQ.
Initially reluctant, she only agrees when she's shown the grim devastation wrought by Snow's bombers (a torched cityscape is littered with human bones) and - after a damp squib attempt at a military marketing campaign amusingly flops - is galvanised into leadership by a spell on the ground as the Capitol's fly-boys incinerate a rebel field hospital.
As she assumes a gung-ho attitude (she gets a lethal new bow) for the big fight-back, Katniss finds herself drawn to loyal lieutenant and all-round good egg Gale Hawthorne (Hemsworth) but still has feelings for captured old flame Peeta (Hutcherson), who is being dangled on TV by Snow and interrogated Martin Bashir-style by Stanley Tucci's slimy telly host Caesar Flickerman.
Although unmistakeably laying the groundwork for the finale, there is - for a series ostensibly aimed at adolescent girls - more genuine tension and bona fide thrills than Iron Man, Thor and Captain America rolled into one.

Katniss tries to be the voice of the rebellion against the Capitol in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Julianne Moore, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Will this movie continue the powerful story that ended with Catching Fire or was splitting the final book into two movies be a slow down to the tempo of the series?

The latest Hollywood trend when adapting the final book of a series is to split it up into two parts. Harry Potter did it. Twilight did it. And frankly, The Hobbit, even though it’s not a series, was a single book that really didn’t need to be split into three parts. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay is the latest adaptation to be split into two acts. Now there are a few ways to look at this. The novel is so jammed packed with action, drama, and important character development that instead of cramming it into a single two or three hour movie, the filmmakers decided to expand it into two different movies to give a better literal adaptation. Another way to see it is that the movie studios are just greedy and force the fans of the books to pay twice the box office to experience what they did reading only one book. That financial strategy is actually brilliant, since most of these two part movies are filmed at the same time so that sets don’t have to broken down and lowers the chances of something tragic happening to the cast. If I was a studio executive, I’d split all books in order to capitalize on as much box office cash, but as a movie goer, I feel that fans are being ripped off by paying twice. Fans are only getting a half of a movie and are being forced to wait a year to see its completion.

Mockingjay Part 1 starts off shortly after the events of Catching Fire.
