This is a good selection of hymns from the Victorian age
on 28 November 2015
This is a good selection of hymns from the Victorian age, and the singing, playing and recording are excellent. Why, then, only three stars? Simply because, like the other recordings in this Wells Cathedral series, it is marred by too much unison singing. The glory of a cathedral choir is its singing of different parts, and the composers represented here generally provided thoroughly enjoyable harmony for their hymns. I feel short-changed when the tune is left to one voice or the choir sings in unison, except perhaps for the first and the final verses. It's a pity, because in other ways the quality of the performances is so good.
