The threat of organized, state-supported terrorism remains as real today as ever. This novel skillfully explores what might happen when previously isolated, uncoordinated terror actions become an orchestrated cascade of destruction, forcing the United States into a military-level response. In "The Enemy Within," the writing team of Bond and Larkin advance from their successful "pocket war" scenarios to espionage action that's much more personal and deadly. This book grabs you by the ears and spins you around.

TOP 500 REVIEWERon 23 April 2014
Larry Bond has written several action packed techno thrillers and the current iteration takes on the topic of a US-Iran showdown. Given that it is taking place prior to 9/11 some elements may seem prophetic, too.

The book starts with a warming of relations between the two states, based on a personal friendship between the two protagonists - the commander in chief of the Iranian Army (General Taleh) and a US SOCOM colonel (Peter Thorn) - followed by a raft of terror attacks in the US, all building up to a grand show down in the end.

The author is clearly conversant with the subject matter of the military and has done a credible job (even if not so good as in Red Phoenix) of bringing some aspects of it across in the book. Not all is perfect, though, with occassional mistakes (such as wrong small arms calibres) creeping in.

Still, the action sequences for the first 80% of the book are quite good and it moves at a very good pace throughout. The main character is relatively likeable if somewhat one dimensional and like in Red Phoenix the author feels the need to introduce a romantic element into the story.

So overall a reasonable action thriller, even if the ending is obvious from about page 20 in the story - which in my book costs it at least the fifth star. Nevertheless, even if not as good as some of his other work, fans will probably be well served in reading the book, and it does introduce some of the characters (Peter Thorn and Helen Gray) whom the author uses in follow-on books, such as Day of Wrath, so reading it is probably useful to the understanding of his later work.

This was the first e-book I have purchased. The detail on the sight and the brief overview of the plot combined to make it a pleasurable experience. The book was so good that I struggled to put it down, the story was fast moving and easy to follow with just the right amount of techinical details to ensure realism.

Typical Larry Bond and friends. Imaginative scenario, well planned and described. Ok a bit of stereotypical characters and guns ho US of A action but a good read all the same. It is fiction after all.

An excellent book well thought out and written. The pairing of Bond and Larkin put them near the top of the intelligence war writers
