In order to know Japanese psyche, this book is great help. Not only for Japanese anime fan, but for sociologists, Japan studies major students. In Japan, animation is not only for children, but also for adults. Japanese society is quite complex, suppressed, polite and violent. In order to understand why Japan can co-exist brutality and sensitivity, this book and studying Japanese television, comics are indispensable.

Another excellent book by Jonathan Clements, this time on the huge and often almost impenetrable world of Japanese dorama (similar to a UK soap opera). This is the only book on the subject in English, at least to my knowledge. The only gripe is that it could do with an updated edition to include the newest doramas but, apart from that, no quibbles whatsoever.
