Celebrating the history of one of America's first craft brewers this book provides readers with a detailed history of Stone, a back catalog of all of Stones beers and recipes for the home-brewers to try.
History of Stone - The first section offers readers insight into Stone's Origins, growth and continuing development. It is told by co-founder and CEO Greg Koch. Much of the tale is told in Stone's sarcastic faux-arrogant style. With frequent sly but intentional digs at mass produced tasteless fizz producers.
Reference section - Here Stone chronicles all of its entire back-catalogue of beer, including collaborative efforts. All beers are listed with release dates, primary hops used, flavor profile, IBU & ABVs.
Recipes - Aimed at the home-brewer Stone includes 18 detailed ALL GRAIN recipes of some great beers. It guides enthusiasts through the mashing, boil, pitching, dry hopping and even the bottling stage of brewing. It includes recipes for Stone's Pale Ale, smoked porter, Levitation Ale Anniversary IPA, Anniversary Porter, Anniversary Ales, Oatmeal Stout, Lees Mild, Heat seaking wheat, Old Guardian, Black Pilsner, saison du Buff and San Diego Session Ale. As an added extra, food pairings and recipes from their own Bistro are also featured.
Entertaining and humorous at times the book caters for both hipster aficionados and novices wishing to dip their toes into the craft beer waters. Its a wonderful reference guide and thorough throughout. My only gripe would be the selection of recipes, including the glaring omissions of Arrogant Bastard, Ruination and Double Bastard.
If you want a little background on Stone, and you like their beer or food, this is your book. I've tried only one homebrew recipe in the book and it was fantastic. I look forward to trying more! The background story from the owners is pleasant and refreshing. Nice book for a gift if you know a homebrewer or a fan of Stone.
