According to Parsa Venkateshwar Rao, Jr "Sen pushes for a rational dialogue and believes in public reasoning". This suggests to me that he will be an author worthy of further investigation.

Looking at the author's credentials in more detail, it is hard not to be over-awed by such a catalogue of achievement: he teaches economics and philosophy at Harvard University, was earlier Master of Trinity College, Cambridge. and among many awards, he holds the Nobel Prize in Economics. The book's dedication - to schoolteachers and health workers - is very moving to my mind.

These thirteen essays, spread over 15 years, will intrigue and challenge those who have visited India like myself, and who have experienced its extremes of wonder and inequality firsthand, as well as those with an interest in global politicial and economic themes.

This book has been very well designed - it is elegant in appearance, and not dauntingly academic. It would nonetheless suit student and lecturers down to the ground, as well as the thoughtful lay reader, looking to see something of the themes emerging from the author's 80+ years of existence. So if justice, identity, deprivation, inequalities, gender politics, education, and the media, are of interest, this book may well interest you!

For those curious about the title, the author explains in The Indian Express:

"When I was growing up in Bengal, it was a big thing: ‘Who is the first boy in class?’ It had to be a boy, and, second, he had to be a great achiever. And it didn’t matter what the others did. I found it very offensive, even as a child." - See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/the-government-would-have-loved-it-if-i-had-quietly-slunk-away-but-that-i-was-not-willing-to-do-amartya-sen/#sthash.RoLBPapA.dpuf

This handsome green hardback with attractive slip cover contains a series of thirteen essays by Amartya Sen over almost 15 years, the 8th of which gives the collection its title.
The 276 pages are brilliant white with a very legible black font, which makes for easy reading, and the book is completed by an in depth subject index. Sen's writing is excellent and whatever your world view or whether you agree with every expression the author makes, you will still be enriched by reading it. Sen is a very good writer, using language powerfully and in a way that will engage you, although in some of these essays you will see how his thinking has been influenced by his early cultural and religious background. You will also find 'heart' in these essays getting glimpses at his genuine concern for others.
Sen writes philosophy as well as economics and reading his viewpoints casts a light into thought that is culturally and religiously influenced in a different way to typical western thought. This is helpful in development of our own thinking and possibly more so in understanding his.
This volume of essays will offer you a light introduction to his writings and whet your appetite for a little more. I will return to this volume again from time to time.

Nobel laureate Amartya Sen has written a fine set of essays. I know little about the author but having read a number of texts on the economic and social changes in India I was interested in finding out more about the country. Especially as the book is published by the world's best academic publisher, Oxford University Press. It's a relatively slim volume but this in no way detracts from the quality of the author's writing. Many of the chapters are previously published essays covering a period of ten years. They broadly cover several themes: culture, society, religion and politics. India is a country in turmoil and Sen captures that mood in his observations. He writes intelligently on each theme and by the end of the book I felt I had a much greater understanding of this fascinating country. It is to the author's credit that I was reminded of my undergraduate module on political thinkers, such as John Stuart Mill - although that was some forty years ago. I think this is a remarkable book. Highly recommended.

In a world full of badly-written drivel masquerading as popular fiction, it is an absolute joy to discover this beautiful, thought-provoking book of essays about India - past, present and hoped-for future.
Amartya Sen is a nobel laureate and a man with a deep and abiding social conscience. Through this book of essays he highlights and analyses issues of welfare, justice, class, poverty and more - through the lens of his beautifully crafted essays.
There are thirteen essays in all - written over a period of fifteen years - and it is very clear that, in putting them all together in this small book, the author has more on his mind than either sales or prestige, as the book is dedicated 'to schoolteachers and health workers'. India has a long history and a complicated present, and this book is certainly food for serious thought for anyone living and working in India - or anyone who has an interest in the Subcontinent - or social justice..
As well as being fascinating and enjoyable, these essays are also instructive and uplifting - and one can only hope that as many health workers and schoolteachers - and anyone else with an interest in the future - gets their hands on it and takes the time to read and absorb the contents.
