Allan Plenderleith has written some fantastic children’s picture books, including, “Princess Chocolate” and “The Smelly Sprout,” so I had high hopes for this. Flo is a little brown chicken, who lives on a tumbledown farm. Every chicken lays one egg every day – except for poor Flo. One day, Flo thinks she has laid an egg – but it doesn’t hatch. However, Flo loves her egg and will do anything to protect it… This is a dark and slightly scary picture book. My little nephew loved it, but if you have a particularly nervous child, it might be better shared in the daytime than at bedtime – there is a storm and a slightly sinister wolf creeping about! Still, Flo is a heroine to cheer for and there is a fun twist to the tale. This author is a really great talent and his books are funny and really imaginative.
