We were putting off watching this film because it hasn't had the best reviews, and were convinced we'd made a bad choice. When we did eventually slip it into the DVD player we were very surprised: the film is actually quite good.

Firstly, the acting is brilliant: Samuel L Jackson excels as "The Champ", Josh Hartnett does a similarly good job as Erik. Secondly, I thought the plot was very good and (having no idea what the film was about beforehand) I didn't predict the twist in the tale. However, what I really liked was that Resurrecting the Champ is about so much more than boxing: it shows the pain of separation and the effect on a child, the single father's efforts to win over his son's affection, one man's struggle to get recognised at work, homelessness, death... the list goes on. It's unexpectedly touching and you do genuinely care for these broken characters.

I don't remember this film in the box office, so it is a low key one that I doubt many people have heard of, but don't let that put you off. It's surprisingly good and I would recommend it.

I came across this recently, having never previously heard of it. A really pleasant surprise this one, and a film that I would highly recommend to anyone who is a fan of true life stories.
The film begins with wannabe big shot reporter Josh Hartnett, desperately in need of his big break, whilst living constantly in his late father's shadow (a famous sports reporter). Then along comes a former boxing legend, now living on the streets, played by Samuel L Jackson...
No more information is needed on this (I implore you not to read the dvd promo blurb before watching), as the seeing the story's events unfold, is one of it's biggest assets. You could apply that to any film of course, but as it had such a low key release, most people could watch this completely cold.
This, quite simply, is one of the best performances Samuel L Jackson has given in recent memory. It's is truly a great part for him, and he really seems to relish it.
I'm not Josh Hartnett's biggest fan, but he puts in a very believable performance as the downtrodden (and down on his luck) reporter. His battles with wanting to both a better reporter and father, really drew me in, making for quite an emotional viewing. And the film is completely unashamed when it comes to tugging at the heartstrings (not a bad thing here).

So, like I said, one for fans of true life dramas, boxing films, sports films, or just one for anyone who is currently experiencing fatherhood...

Great actors, think JH is underrated and SLJ is always a great watch. Yes it had the typical Americanism in it but I found I was dragged along with the storyline. Enjoyable, great cast and a feel good factor too.

I had never heard of this story, but thoroughly enjoyed the film. This is very different from other SLJ films I've seen, but he is excellent. An excellent story.
