Readers may be interested to know that Dorothy L. Sayers gave this book a very favourable review in The Times when it was first published. Here is a quote: "To say that the book is beautifully written woukd be mere impertinence; we expect no less from one of the most brilliant of living stylists....... This book is full of hard Knox. "

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth reading.... 12 April 2013

Lots of interesting characters and a good mystery. Msgr. Knox has an eye for drawing interesting people and slips a little sly wit into the novel.

5.0 out of 5 stars An English country house murder 2 July 2015
By Bracton - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Kindle Edition Verified Purchase
This story is one in the series featuring Miles Bredon and Inspector Leyland. The plot doesn't require you to suspend disbelief, but some readers might find some of the characters to be too sparsely described. The real entertainment value of the story is in the puzzle and seeing how Bredon and Leyland sort it out. And at the end of it all, you might find yourself momentarily wondering about the banality of evil. If you like English country house murders from the Golden Age, you're sure to enjoy this book.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good Sunday Afternoon Read 21 Sept. 2016

I enjoyed reading the book. This was my third Knox book. He isn't Agatha Christie but he knows how to craft a good story. My one criticism is that he can be a bit too "British". Some of his terms and assumptions can leave us poor folks from the U.S. scratching our heads. Does not prevent you from enjoying the story, however.
