A Great Bit of Nostalgia, but There Are Better Options Today
on 15 September 2017
I purchased this book for nostalgic reasons, because the graphics are identical to those contained in the original Beatles Complete version, which I owned in the 1960s (and no longer have). If I recall correctly, the original one that I owned was not an “Easy Guitar” version, but a far more complex beast, more appropriate to the demands of a concert pianist than a guitarist.
In those days, until the appearance of the original Beatles Complete version, the only access one had to Beatles scores was via sheet music of specific recordings and compilation Souvenir Beatles Song Albums (produced by Northern Songs) containing several LP based hits. These were predominantly vocal/piano versions supported by guitar chords, as was the norm for the publication of most music in those days.
Bearing in mind that there are so many excellent scores of Beatles music available to today’s guitarists, serving all ability levels and, in some cases, matching closely what can be heard in their recordings, it would not be difficult to find a Beatles compilation that does the job better than Beatles Complete does.
Consequently, the Easy Guitar and other versions of Beatles Complete will be remembered affectionately by those, such as myself, who remember what it meant to them in the past, but for today’s purists looking for something that better serves their guitar playing, they will not have to look too far before they find it.
