His first three novels were set on the Swedish island of Oland.'The Asylum'
is based on the mainland and features Jan,a male in his late twenties, with
an extremely troubled past, and a desire to make children's lives better.
He is a pre-school carer,and obtains a temporary job in a pre-school attached
to a secure psychiatric hospital housing some dangerous criminal patients.
Jan thinks that an ex-singer he met in his childhood, and is obsessed with,
is in the asylum, and he is intent on navigating the secret passages and breaching
the security in order to speak with her.
The novel takes us to and fro from the present situation and Jan's disturbing past,
as it builds up the suspense and works towards its denouement.
This is a brave ,sometimes troubling, skillfully written thriller.
The book is told in the third person but very much from Jan's perspective. Cutting between present and past, we gradually discover what events in Jan's troubled past have led him here. The other characters can accept him at face value as a pleasant young man who loves and is loved by the children in his care. But the reader knows that there are darker aspects to his personality and hidden incidents in his past. There is some moral ambiguity here - as we find out about his history, it is easy for the reader to empathise with Jan despite, rather than because of, his past actions and current intentions.
Theorin writes well and the translation by Marlaine Delargy is seamless; it's easy to forget that this is a translation at all. The plot is well constructed and has some original aspects to it. However, the story is told very slowly and somehow that stopped the tension building as much as might have been expected given the subject matter. Jan is a believable character, a troubled soul who finds it difficult to make connections with the people around him.Read more ›
Almost everyone who works at St Patricia's has a secret.. and it is these secrets, along with slow burning tension that makes this story an interesting read.
Jan Hauger is a troubled young man, he is employed in the pre-school that is attached to the asylum and very early on we come to realise that he is lonely as well as a loner. With only one friend, Rami, who he met a long time ago at a teen - psyche unit when he tries to commit suicide, and who he made a pact with, The Asylum covers obsession and revenge in such a way that I found it quite an emotional and heart-tugging read.
Of course, in the setting that this tale is based there are some hideous characters, but most of them have something that draws out a certain sympathy from the reader.
The Asylum is intense and gripping. It is also psychologically chilling.
I love translated book and this one is really well written. I read it in one sitting and as this is over 400 pages it was a good 7 hours before I finished it. It was 7 hours well spent and The Asylum is a book I am happy to recommend.
Another great story, this one features a young man with a troubled past who finds work at a pre-school established for the children of a psychiatric hospital. While he wants to get in touch with a patient he believes is in the hospital, he also has a past which involves a young child at a pre-school. All this is made very clear in the first few pages of this novel, and we know right from the start that Jan has ulterior motives for his apparent actions in moving to this new area and this new job. But what Jan doesn’t know is that others in the town and in the pre-school and in the psychiatric hospital also have their own ulterior motives and their own ambitions.
The story moves between Jan’s past and his present, and we see the story unfold as Jan does. It has plenty of action, plenty of psychological drama and people’s pasts coming back to haunt them. Great stuff.
The story is about loneliness and isolation and consequences which is shown in different aspects throughout the story. The isolation of Jan, the main character is shown well as he tries to recapture something that he lost and his actions to pay back his debt.
As for the ending? I didn't love it or hate it, I expected it and there is slight potential for a sequel but it would have to be as well done as this book was to work.
Will definitely read more by this author.
