3.7 out of 5 stars

First of all this is mainly USA content, it is lavishly illustrated but the illustrations do not really work with the Kindle as although you can zoom in you don't get any better resolution, also a lot of the captions are misplaced. There are also a number of typos for example the bird Wren is shown as When and a Granny knot is shown Cranny. Some of the detail is surprising as in one chapter it gives information on dangerous Fish and animals examples given include the duck billed platypus which the male apparently has poisonous spines on its rear feet not an animal that I would expect to encounter often likewise I would not expect the sea bass to be high on the list.
In one example of signalling it gives the "American Morse Telegraph Alphabet" rather than the International one among other things this one uses dot dot for O which is not very helpful if you want to send SOS (Usually dot dot dot dash dash dash dot dot dot). In this section there are Egyptian hieroglyphics however the resolution is not good enough for it to be meaningful.
Other information given is the American Bill of Rights a strange inclusion in a book of this type.
I think it tries to cover too much as it includes such diverse things as sailing and skiing it also feels like an old book and probably a lot of the content is but tries to be up to date with passing references to GPS and mobile phones.
The book is divided into a number of sections which are further divided however the main ones are:-
Hunting and fishing
Defensive Fighting Skills
Classic Baseball
More things the adventurous boy should know.
In summary an interesting book that does not fulfil its intention but there is much interesting information some to be taken very cautiously for example there is a method of testing if plants etc are poisonous or not I DO NOT RECOMMEND YOU TRY THIS.

You read the title for this, and think that it will be like another The Dangerous Book for Boys. In some ways you would be correct, but this is for the US market, therefore the section on hunting with guns cannot be considered for little children in this country.

There are sections on camping, hunting, hiking, water sports (not the adult kind), and winter activities, along with other things. As for winter activities this includes cross country skiing, which obviously is of no use living in a city.

At the moment this is on promo, so it won't cost you anything to get, but I would advise you to probably steer clear after that. Unfortunately, although there are some good things here this book isn't really for the UK market and so a lot of it is not really applicable, also some of the sections are really for people who have got money to spend, not ideal in today's economic crisis.

I must disagree with the other reviewers. loved it and learnt a lot from it. Sure there is lots you wouldn't want your kid to do such as aim a gun with both eyes closed or taste unknown plants.

However on the dad cool factor, knowing how to make a shelter and fish using a hook and an old beer bottle, it was up there for me.

As for the diagrams could work most of them out. It will make you smile and any dad who writes a book with his son is already cool for me.
