Product description

Product Description

That's What Happens was recorded in Studio Two, at Abbey Road Studios with Grammy-winning bluesman Joe Henry (Solomon Burke, Allen Toussaint, Elvis Costello & Bonnie Raitt) on production duties. It sees Chas and Dave return to their roots with a collection of early R&B, Skiffle and rock n’ roll classics, alongside new takes on songs of their own. The album highlights their finely-honed, versatile musicianship and intricate vocal harmonies and features a team of musicians and special guests including guitarists Albert Lee and Martin Taylor, Buddy Holly and The Crickets’ drummer J. I Allison and on keys Jools Holland and Hugh Laurie.

Anybody who approaches this album with any kind of negative prejudices should probably go and browse elsewhere, because, let's face it; you're not going to enjoy it at all. However, if you are a fan of Chas & Dave, know the entire range of their material, their influences and their long, varied career (or, at least, quite like them are open minded enough to give this a go), then you are almost guaranteed to really enjoy this album. I hold my hands up; I've never been anything but neutral about the "rockney" duo. I invested in a best of earlier this year as I was going to a Chas & Dave gig with a friend and found that I really quite liked a lot of it, although I admit that plenty of the enjoyment was down to nostalgia as, when I was kid in the early eighties, they seemed to be everywhere for a while. When I heard that there was a new Joe Henry-produced album coming out with some well-respected special guests, I was intrigued and knew it was either going to be very good or dreadful... thankfully it's the former, rather than the latter.

This album is an attempt to re-introduce Charles & David (perhaps they should have called themselves that!) to the world as the serious and very capable musicians they have always been. It's still a fun endeavour and there are plenty of songs to sing along and tap your feet to, but the overall tempo is somewhat slower than the piano hammerers they're best known for and there's a nice mix of rock, blues, skiffle, boogie-woogie and much of the music that has influenced the duo over the years. There are a few standards here such as "San Francisco Bay Blues", "Midnight Special" and "Glory Of Love" which are respectfully and joyously tackled by the band. Everything on this album is at least listenable, but most of it is really very good indeed.

This is a really good record with Chas and Dave not doing anything new but giving us their unique blend of rock n' roll, R&B and skiffle together with old-fashioned English pub-style singalong. Joe Henry (Hugh Laurie, Bettye LaVette, Loudon Wainwright etc) produces and keeps everything very simple and direct, letting the music speak for itself. Everything is very relaxed with Chas often bringing in the soloists with comments of "Go on Martin" etc but this certainly isn't a chaotic rambling jam - everything here is very crisp and really well-played. There are some top-name guests including guitarists Albert Lee and Martin Taylor, Jools Holland, Hugh Laurie and Crickets' drummer Jerry Allison but I also really enjoyed the fiddle of Lucy Wilkins and Greg Cohen's double bass. There are some good old blues songs like Jesse Fuller's 'San Francisco Bay Blues', Big Bill Broonzy's 'All by myself' and Leadbelly's 'Midnight Special', together with golden oldies like 'The glory of love', 'Pretty baby' and 'I can't give you anything but love' and rock and roll rarities like 'Look at me' - which are all transformed into the classic Chas and Dave-style. However, my favourite song was probably the very clever newish song 'Lonnie D' - a homage to the King of Skiffle Lonnie Donegan, closely followed by another more recent song, the single 'When two world's collide'. Great stuff from two British rock and roll veterans who have paid their dues and know their roots music but have created their own completely unique sound.

Got this cd this morning, BRILLIANT!, a couple of old blues favorites given the chas n dave treament along with a Buddy Holly song and a brilliant self-penned song called 'Lonnie D' how they remember the words and sing it so fast is amazing.
They also have guests, Jools Holland, Martin Taylor, Hugh Laurie and J I Allison on various tracks.
This will be played many more times by me.

Over the years I have amassed several hundred cd's, vinyl and digital albums covering original blues, bluegrass, country, jazz, rock, everything in-between and of course Chas and Dave. However it has been a very, very long time since I have listened to an album of such brilliance as this. I waited patiently for its release while being teased by tracks on later live and other TV shows and now I have it I can say that I am in no doubt that this is the best Chas and Dave album they have ever produced. The arrangements, vocals and track listings are wonderful. The crisp vocals and world class only matched by the superb paying. I'm a lifelong Chas and Dave fan but also have many other artists in my top listings. Last year I bought the `Boogie with Stu' - Ben Waters Tribute cd which along with this album are possibly the best albums I have had the privilege to enjoy in a very, very, very long time.

Cost me £9 with Amazon.
I can't think of a better way to spend £9.
It was wonderful and relaxing. Lovely acoustics and piano and the boys can still sing fantastically.
They have guests like Jools Holland and Hugh Laurie on piano.
They should be marched back in the studio and forced to stay there, till they come up with a new double album.
12 tracks at 37 mins was not long enough.

The mature voices of Charlie and Dave are like well distilled whisky. Chas has his growling cutting edge sound, complimented by Dave's soulful mellow timbre. They regale us here with a superb selection of old songs from the American dust bowl to the nifty spark of the skiffle era. The production is masterly, and brings out the natural acoustics of the backing players to perfection. Martin Taylor adds a touch of class to the proceedings, but the whole ensemble is well represented in each different track. This makes for an album of genius, which I am proud to have in my collection. It is the memorable album of 2013!
