Frankie Laine was one of the most popular singers of the forties and fifties with a large voice that was equally at home on ballads as well as more up tempo numbers. His voice was also used as the soundtrack to several famous western films.
His style was, however, unlike most of his crooning contemporaries and was a precursor to the many youthful rockers who were about to emerge. With the exception of Johnnie Ray whose place in the influential arena of popular singers has unfortunately been sadly forgotten,Frankie Laine was a genuine contender as one of the great early messengers of what was about to follow.
It is very likely that a youthful Elvis Presley would have been aware of Frankie Laine as well as the many others whose influence on him has been well documented.
The orchestrations on many of these songs are a bit hackneyed but in no way do they detract from the power of his voice.
Just listen to the opening lines of 3:10 to Yuma and you are immediately transported to the age of the great Hollywood western.

A very good selection of Frankie Laine Hits, duets with Jo Stafford & Doris Day included good sound reproduction, BUT My Friend a big UK from 1954 missing shame as it would have made the collection perfect.good value though.
