Thats Life gets unfairly criticised in my opinion,ok so it's not the most essential Sinatra album out there nor is Ernie Freeman the best arranger/conductor Sinatra ever worked with but it does have some good songs on it's lean 10 track selection.

Ernie Freeman imbues the album with more of a contemporary (for the decade) sound which although wasn't really suited to Sintara, this was something Frank had dabbled with ever since the 60's began. Songs like "Sand and Sea" are very very 60's sounding with lots of hammond organ and female backing vocals, this is the sort of song you could have easily given Tom Jones or Englebert Humperdinck and they would have had a hit with it and although Sinatra sounds not as confident on this type of track, it is still quite catchy and fun. Another thing Ernie Freeman pushes on this album is the use of backing singers which Sinatra never really needed (though he would occasionally use them on the odd 50's capitol track) again this dates the album somewhat but it's not overdone to the point of frustration.

The gems on this album are the gorgeous "You're Gonna Hear from Me" composed by Andre Previn this see's Sinatra given a track more like some of his earlier work with a great orchestra to play off slowly building to a rousing climax! "I will wait for you" is also excellent and very catchy, of course the title track is a classic but i have heard better versions,Freeman drowns the song in too much organ (unlike Nelson Riddle who used the organ more intelligently)and the pace is a bit lacking but it's still a decent version. Elsewhere "Somewhere my love" from Doctor Zhivago is given a big bad workout with a more pacy version than the original Petula Clark original.

Rather are filler songs. As always Frank in good voice as arrangements but the songs chosen are not the best. This is an album for collectors only. It is the style of the music of the late 60s. Recorded in November 1966.

A different Frank, a swinging Frank, an alert, bright, get-up and go Frank. Just one listen makes you feel alive and ready for anything. Tracks which bear repeating over and over, it's great.

So pleased with my purchase, My Dad had been trying to get That's Life but not having the internet he couldn't find it.
He was thrilled when I gave him the That's Life CD.
