I used some of the tricks in this book back in '10 to win a student election - highest number of votes ever for a candidate in the history of elections in that University, I kid you not.

I bought the first edition of this book a few years ago after developing an interest in the art of persuasion - tropes, body language, structure, etc.

I usually got referred by websites to long tomes by Aristotle and the like, but Thank You For Arguing does a really excellent job of taking all the methods used by people who are paid to change your mind - politicians, celebrities, etc - and explaining them in a structured, example-led way.

Extremely comprehensive, the book uses hundreds of examples from popular culture - The Simpsons ones are my favorite - to explain each method in detail.

It is superbly organised. Each method is described and exampled in many well-written, digestible chunks.

It begins with a few 'Big Ideas' - longer narratives that underline the entire process of persuasion. The most important, I have found, in this section is the order of persuasion: change their mood, then their mind, then get them to act (in order of increasing difficulty too!)

The remainder of the book is split into two sections: Offense, and Defense. Both contain many tricks, each given its own chapter, and each chapter including wonderful explanations, many examples and many useful tidbits in the margins.

I now give seminars on the art of persuasion up and down Ireland. My first piece of advice to any student who wants a career in politics, media appearances or sales: buy this book before any other.

On the whole I cannot recommend this book enough to anyone interested in the practical art of persuasion - now or throughout history. It is practical, intelligent, comprehensive and incredibly useful.

Jay writes with a really engaging style that draws upon some of his personal situations, as well more infamous examples. His amusing asides poke fun at his own life in one sentence, while gently mocking you as the reader in the next. A well constructed, thought-provoking, comprehensive breakdown of rhetorical techniques and ideas, that I know I'll be returning to for inspiration in years to come.
