HASH(0x9d974b34) out of 5 stars Magnificent work. 16 April 2014

This is best literary criticism that I have read in many years. It is both a magnificent biography of the man himself and incidentally, of his wife and the literary society around him. .It establishes that Vanity Fair is a great classic best thought of as a smaller qquivalent of War and Peace an d still worth reading because of its deep understanding of men and women. He shows you how to read the book. For example, who would have thought that Beckie Sharp tested her victims for their sexual inclinations in a very Victorian way? and in the process demonstrates why his later novels do not live up to that achievement. It also directs our attention to his forgotten earlier work which is full of life and vigor. My only "criticism" is that I wish he had given us more about his work as Trollope's mentor. Professor Carey has recently written his own biography. I cannot wait to read it.
