Product description
Uncut version of the gruesome horror prequel. It is 1969 and the war in Vietnam is raging. Two young men, Dean (Taylor Handley) and Eric (Matt Bomer) are spending a last weekend with their girlfriends before being shipped overseas to the war. While on the road they get into an accident that calls the local sheriff (R. Lee Ermey) to the scene. But what the young friends don't know is that the 'sheriff' is really the psychopathic uncle of Thomas Hewitt - a deformed, demented killer who will become known as Leatherface.

Set before the first remake (keep up, its hard for me too) in 1969 with the Vietnam war in full swing. Even this far away in the dusty, backward roads of rural Texas, the call to arms is never far away. En route to serve their country, two brothers Dean (Taylor Handley) and Eric (Matt Bomer) are spending a last weekend with their girlfriends Chrissie (Jordan Brewster) and Bailey (Diora Baird) travelling across the texan plains before being shipped overseas. However, as fate would have it the foursome get involved in a serious car accident that prompts series villain Sheriff Hoyt (R. Lee Ermey) to investigate and before long, all kinds of gruesome shenanigans are at play: Not only from a roaming biker gang who shoot first and ask questions later, but a demented creature calling himself Leatherface who wears a dead skin mask and carries a buzzing chainsaw for company - ready and eager to slice into anything - or one that happens to get in his way...
This prequel to both the original and 2003 remake starring Jennifer Biel is an exceptionally dark affair: Whereas that first reboot painted a pretty picture of madness, this one wants to get its hands dirty - with enough blood and gore to fill a hundred generic horror movies. Plugged into the then popular 'torture porn' cycle of the time of its release, this 'Leatherface' adventure is all about the 'saw - and this saw rips, tears and generally decimates all and sundry (a particularly grim sequence where 'Face bisects a biker illustrates how nasty these things have become) with nary a respite. Director Jonathan Liebesman (fresh from 'Darkness Falls' and before... ahem 'Teenage Mutant Nonja Turtles') continues the aesthetic look and feel of the first Marcus Nispel picture but ups the ante with grue and entrails. The cast, again like the previous picture are a solid bunch and thankfully R. Lee Ermey is given more screentime on this occasion, ensuring his character is a bona fide TCM character to remember. There may be no 'ChopTop' or 'Hitchiker' amongst the ranks of the Sawyer clan this time, but each one is clearly defined with enough meat on the bones to allow the audience to connect and be repulsed at their depravity...
Entertainment in Video's UK DVD release sports a great transfer with good audio and a short set of extra features such as an audio commentary with director Jonathan Liebesman and producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, "Down to the Bone: Anatomy of a Prequel" featurette, deleted scenes, theatrical trailer and the film in its full, uncut form. All in all, seasoned TCM fans will surely have this one in their collection (especially for the price Amazon are asking for it) and its certainly one for the late night gore crowd but as with all things of this nature, the law of diminishing returns has reared its head and even though the cast and producers are game, the exceptionally dark tone almost derails any form of entertainment that could have been had. Maybe with the right amount of balance between tension and splatter and a little more intelligence regarding examination of the Vietnam war (which the original movie so eloquently echoed with) - this could have been a contender, but as it is - its just another gooey sequel in the series.
More gore, more blood, more nerdish behaviour from those about to die as usual. The only difference to this remake is an additional story line showing 'Leatherface' being born and working in a slaughterhouse prior to his rampage which is orchestrated by Ermey's Sheriff for the needs of his family i.e. cannibalism. Distasteful.
But it's all in good fun and Ermey is occasionally in full flow and hams it up as much as other greats have done in the 'gentler' horror films starring Vincent Price, Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee for example. This kind of horror film, like many of the torture porn genre, is all about excessive violence and buckets of blood and can be appreciated for what it is.
I mean I have loads of chainsaws, both essence-driven and electric, but I would never use them tip first and on a human body----- it would take hours to clean it afterwards with all that clothing, flesh and bone trapped in the chain and blade. I'd hate to have been the maintenance guy on this film.
My dvd is Region 2, 2 disc with an uncut version of 92 minutes as well as the theatrical version of 89 minutes, both include a commentary. Disc 2 has bonus features including 3 alternate endings --- one ending was enough for me.
English subtitles present thankfully.
