Product description

Product Description

A lovingly compiled 5-CD set in a clambox with a informative 28 page booklet, this is the ultimate tribute to the first country blues superstar. Jefferson was biggest-selling male blues artist of his age and the 95 tracks included here, recorded primarily in Chicago between 1926 and his untimely death in 1929 include all his greatest works, including 'Match Box Blues', and 'Black Snake Moan' , which launched the whole Texas blues tradition . With informative notes and session details this set is part of the Complete Blues series, described by Uncut magazine as ' a dazzling, comprehensive story of the blues...the most user-friendly compendium on the market'. Disc five also includes an additional tracks from three of Jefferson's lesser known followers, Oak Cliff T-Bone, Willie Reed and Little Hat Jones

A gorgeous cardboard box with separate disc each on its individual sleeve, complete with a really fine 30-pages booklet, enclosing all of Lemon's recordings (1926-29) plus all 6 tracks by Willie Reed, complete Little Hat Jones' (10) and Oak-Cliff T-Bone (later known as the very father of electric blues guitar, of course). Sound is good (I guess most of the stuff comes from Yazoo's and Document/JSP masterings) considering that we are dealing with those old Paramounts. And at that price, you can't go wrong, by the way!

Great collection of music from one of the Blues pioneers. The sound quality on some of the recordings is a bit ropey but that is to be expected on recordings made in the first half of the 20c. That said this set represents good value for money. One gripe is the quality of the card sleeves the cd's come in, I had to glue two of the five sleeves myself as they came apart when I took the cd's out.

The recording left a lot to be desired, though his performance was solid

1.0 out of 5 stars This set is heartbreaking. 7 Dec. 2014
By Christopher Alan Metzler - Published on Amazon.com

I hate to, but have to, echo the comments of the other one-star reviewer.

On the surface, this set gives you every reason to be really excited. There are several multi-disc sets out there that claim to contain Blind Lemon Jefferson's complete recordings; and of course there are differences in their content, making the claims suspect or patently false. This set is (at the present) the most comprehensive available. As for sound quality, people debate over this issue, the role of efforts to mitigate noise in the source materials, etc., constantly, so anything I say will be subjective; but with that in mind, I'll just say that I think the sound quality of this set is solid. And the price is very very reasonable for what you supposedly are getting. So, yeah, this set looks great.

Except . . .the discs come with all kinds of problems: tracking issues, skips, etc.; and sound glitches at specific times in numerous tracks that are clearly in the digital domain and not associated with problems in the source material. When I ran into these problems with the first set I bought, I wrote to the Amazon Marketplace dealer that sold me the item. They sent me another, free of charge. And that one also had skips and tracking problems and so on; it also had the same digital glitches in the same spots of the same tracks. The fact that some of the problems are digital glitches occuring at the same times in the same tracks on different sets makes me suspect an issue in the disc masters, but I don't know.

I contacted Snapper, the company that put this set out. They expressed surprise, saying they were unaware of any problems with the set (which seems odd, given that others have been complaining about it on the web), and offered me a free CD from their catalog. But I wasn't interested in another CD from their catalog. I wanted to get a good Blind Lemon Jefferson set. Unfortunately, that doesn't seem to be in the cards: they've told me that there are no plans to re-release a fixed copy of this at present.

Furthermore, this is not a one-off issue. I'm about to leave a review on their complete Blind Willie McTell set that will read almost identically to this one, with the exception that I haven't contacted Snapper about that one yet.

Snapper apparently has some real issues with their products. I hope at some point they get them fixed, because this set *could* be a minor miracle. Instead, it's a major disappointment.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Jeffers" Is Hollerin' The Blues... 19 May 2009
By R. Webb - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD Verified Purchase
Blind Lemon Jefferson, professor of the Texas blues recorded from 1925-1929 over ninety songs in which most of these are self-penned by Blind Lemon. It's not hard to tell listening to the man, Blind Lemon lived these blues in which is revealed in his powerful voice and unique guitar licks that could spin a tornado around and gently bring it back down to earth. Blind Lemon, commercially was the most successful blues artist of his time, selling the most records for his trusty label Paramount, surpassing other fellow recording artist of the time. Snapper records gives us a chance to hear and possess this box set loaded with the complete ninety five song repretoire of Blind Lemon and eighteen additional songs from followers of Lemon and the Texas blues, - Willie Reed, T-bone Walker, and 'Little Hat' Jones. This five disc set starts from 1925 to 1935 covering Blind Lemon Jeffers' career and ends on disc five, the best sounding compilation with six "cleaner" songs from Jefferson, including two of T-bone Walker's first two recordings, six songs fom Willie Reed, and the complete ten songs from George 'Little Hat' Jones, absolutely mesmerizing, this guy was a natural. The sound is not as good as the YAZOO recordings but varies with each song and each disc, and the sound seems to progress better from beginning to end, - disc two, four, and five are the best, featuring on disc two is Jeffers' signature, BLACK SNAKE MOAN, overall an important historic recording of the blues at it's very best, BLIND LEMON JEFFERSON'S blues. The packaging is a solid cardboard box set with cardboard disc sleeves, featuring a booklet with a biography and discography, imported from the UK, 2007. (too bad we can't hear 'cleaner' recordings of Jefferson and Patton, those good ol' 78's.) last note: for the record, Snapper items i've purchased, this Blind Lemon set, the Leadbelly set, and Sleepy John Estes with no problems whatsoever, no skipping etc... no such thing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible quality control. 1 May 2014
By toomanyrecords - Published on Amazon.com

My single star is for this package, obviously not for the music. I've ordered this "Made in China" product three times from two different sellers and I can't get a copy that will play all 5 discs all the way through without skipping and dropping out. The first copy started skipping half way through disc 1. The second and third copies couldn't make it through disc 2. The "mini LP" type sleeves are unglued. The discs are covered with hairline scratches and some larger ones as well, and one disc had fingerprints. There is apparently zero quality control in the manufacture of this product. As far as sound quality goes it's roughly similar to the JSP box, i.e. some cuts sound great, most are listenable, a few are almost inaudible. As other reviewers have noted Yazoo's "Best of...
has great sound. The "Black Swan" issue is supposed to sound very good and I think I'll order that one now. And I'll probably cool down and order this one again as well.
