White folk playing soul? Country musicians with the blues? This album, which brings together many of the artists featured in the fabulous 'Country Got Soul' compilations, shows just how closely intertwined many of the musical traditions of the southern states really are, traditions which we in England tend to think of as mutually incompatible.Standout tracks for me include 'Sapelo' by Larry Jon Wilson, a rich slice of southern gothic with Wilson's subterranean Georgia drawl bathed in a wash of bluesy organ and caressed by gorgeous gusts of horn, heart-rending vocal performances by Bonnie Bramlett on 'Where's Eddie' and George Soule on 'I'm Only Human' and throughout the impeccable musicianship of these old time session men, understated but always pertinant and respectful of all America's musical heritages.I thought Levon Helm was the funkiest white drummer in America until I heard Bryan Owings. If you like your music heartfelt, authentic and just a little old-fashioned I can think of no better new album to buy.

Having purchased this album based only on a solitary review in the Observer Music Monthly, I can only say that it wwas money well spent. The singers/musicians on the album deserve a much wider audience. The music is less country and much more soul than expected and all the better for it. I cannot recommend the CD highly enough. Stand out tracks for me were Jaguar Man and Friday Fights at Al's Place, but there is really very little difference in quality between individual songs.

Having bought this album without knowing anyhting about it i guess i took a risk well sometime one has to but this is a must have collection of songs and it is a little gem and well worth buying.' Country got soul ' and so will you when you play this.It is a fabulous collection of rich well crafted fine songs that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end and lift your soul to new hights. The musicans who play on this album are so great that my words can not convey how really good they are and they are. It is everything,America's finest. As the sleeve notes say it is magical, the music, the feel, the grooves the soul. I adore it and i think you will to.

Awareness of musical scene in Muscle Shoals Alabama came slowly in the UK.A series of labels which began in shambolic fashion from Arthur Aleander in the 1962 led to the actual studio where Elvis cut 2 albums.
Florence Alabama meant Sandy Posey, formerly a session singer for the HIT label. The usual misinformation was telling us her real name was Martha Sharp and Born A Woman was her first recording.Wrong on both counts as it turned out-Martha Sharp was also a recording artist on Monument and Born A Woman was a cover but if they could get this wrong then what chance most of the lesser lights would afford more accuracy. But this was the times-it would be years before the research began to throw up the minituae
At the other end of the Alabama music scene were the Carter Family & Cathy who were from the same town as Sandy Posey but were to remain no more than a blip even though Bill & Opal Carter had cut a version of Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold Me Down-one of the last songs made by Johnny Cash
So here's the first volume of The Country Soul revue which stars many of the names from this musical backwater-some like Tony Joe White and Billy Swan had songs covered by Elvis others like Dan Penn wrote songs which dozens covered including Adios Amigo-a track first heard on the Arthur Aleander tribute as sung by Donnie Fritts.Note this is NOT the Jim Reeves song which is Adios AMIGOS
The CD comes as a thick book with a spine and antique looking pages which even show the coffee stains
