Inevitably given the number of stories in the book, the quality is variable, but the best of them are haunting and powerful. I'd particularly recommend "Fields" by Desmond Warzel and "Outstanding Matters" by Neil Coughlan for bringing interesting and moving twists to the genre.
Given the low cost on Kindle of this collection, it's well worth it, and you should find something that will grab your attention and stay lodged in your memory.
It's really a testament to the talent and imagination of these writers that they all had such different takes on one theme, each story was fresh and well put together. Some were humerous, some were serious, but either way the quality was great.
For the price, you cannot quibble. I'd have been more than happy to pay double for this book, it was better than an informal dinner party hosted by Kris Akabusi!
This isn't my favourite genre, either. I wanted to like it because a dear friend of mine is one of the authors, and like it I did.
The stories are genuinely interesting and the characters so real. Of the twenty three stories I can honestly say that there was only one that I really didn't enjoy, and another couple that were clearly weaker than the rest. That's pretty good going by anyone's standards.
Some stories are strangely uplifting considering the subject matter, others sad. There is even a good laugh or two along the way. The variety of pace and content, however, means that you don't dwell on any one emotion for too long :-)
I thoroughly recommend this book. It has opened my eyes to a genre I would never have previously considered.

I'll start by saying I don't normally go for sci-fi, so I wasn't sure what to expect here. It was recommended to me though, by someone whose opinions I generally agree with, so I... Read morePublished on 10 Jan. 2011 by Biffer Spice
