The American mezzo Susan Graham trains her glorious voice on six arias by Mozart and six by Gluck on her latest CD accompanied by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment under Harry Bicket. Nine of the 12 are trousered. The disc hits us with a popular favourite as early as the second track when Graham takes on the bursting hormones of the adolescent Cherubino in a breathless rendition of the boy's palpitating first aria "Non so più cosa son". What a pity she falls slightly flat on the dying word of the last suspended phrase ("m'oda"). There is also a slight disagreement about pitch with the clarinet when Cherubino returns at track seven with "Voi che sapete". Her best singing is in Iphigenie's heartbeat aria "O Malheureuse" from Gluck's Iphigenie en Tauride. The long top notes are exquisitely approached and lovingly held. Perhaps she is just better at putting across female conceits. Her low notes sound plausible in the third Iphigenie aria, "Je t'implore", but her yet lower ones in Orpheus' aria "Amour viens rendre" from Gluck's Orpheus et Eurydice involve a too obvious gear-change. Still these small quibbles are forgotten on hearing her dazzling triplet runs in "Parto ma tu" from Mozart's La clemenza di Tito and extraordinary breath control over the long, jumpy melismas in the last and title track, "Il tenero momento" from Mozart's Lucio Silla. These moments are definitely not pants. --Rick Jones
