Legendary silent film director Cecil B. DeMille didn't much alter the way he made movies after sound came in, and this 1956 biblical drama is proof of that. While graced with such 1950s niceties as VistaVision and Technicolor, The Ten Commandments (DeMille had already filmed an earlier version in 1923) has an anachronistic, impassioned style that finds lead actors Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner expressively posing while hundreds of extras writhe either in the presence of God's power or from orgiastic heat. DeMille, as always, plays both sides of the fence as far as sin goes, surrounding Heston's Moses with worshipful music and heavenly special effects while also making the sexy action around the cult of the Golden Calf look like fun. You have to see The Ten Commandments to understand its peculiar resonance as an old-new movie, complete with several still-impressive effects such as the parting of the Red Sea. --Tom Keogh, Amazon.com -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine andere Ausgabe: DVD.

The story is divided into two essential acts, the first part deals with the upbringing of Moses and the political context of the time he lived, as a member of royalty Moses is privileged and wealthy though not also unkind or wicked. Several supporting characters are introduced, including the all powerful Pharaoh, Moses's adoptive mother, his adoptive brother the cruel Ramses, a love interest and a young Jewish Slave called Joshua. During much character development Moses learns more of his Hebrew past and begins to detest the system that has enslaved his people. Rameses on the other hand develops to become only more controlling and unjust, tensions reach a head when Moses kills a man about to whip a slave to death, his punishment - exile and the loss of a chance ever to be king. After further hardship Moses settles with a local Jewish tribe in the wilderness after impressing them with his bravery, he finds peace among it's simple rustic life, as well as further happiness in marriage to the daughter of a tribal chief. By this point he has come a long way from the beginning of the story. I adored the first part of this film, especially for the rich interaction between the different characters and the dynamics they have, as well as the character development they all undergo
The second part deals with Moses encounter with God which set him on a mission to lead the Jewish people back away from captivity in Egypt. Moses's encounters with God change him both physically and psychologically. He becomes stern, fanatical, almost a zealot in parts. The battle of wills between him and Ramses plays out as Egypt is subjected to one kind of plague after another.Read more ›
Went into it as someone with a ten foot projection screen who has never seen a Cecil B. DeMille film before. I am completely areligious. I had some vague memory of Moses and the ten commandments. This is all you need to know. The story of the man’s progress from being given away at birth to leading people from slavery to freedom
So, that being brought up one way then realising his true birth circumstances resonated with this adopted reviewer. He knew his self was the same. His free-will innate.
This is a movie of today. We witness the coming of compassion. Even these days to speak of refugees from far lands as ‘economic immigrants’ ignores the deep suffering of every individual who leaves the land they would much prefer to stay. To move to a land of a different language and culture. At one point a woman called Sephora makes a speech that clearly marks the human aspect of struggle from the racist politics of rule.
I could see God as an idea. ‘I am that I am’ a voice tells Moses. Always in the spectacular movie there is room for inner revelation. Miracles as magic tricks and miraculous events. On the path to Justice. On the path to Justice compassion must reign. Compassion. For freedom to bloom greed must be banished.
Even after much strife gold is offered to the masses in response to a Leader’s absence. In times of doubt they revel in gold’s debauchery. I’ll leave you to see what saves them.
On the technical side it is almost too good for its own good. This blu ray is a 2010 6K restoration that shows some of the joins for the blue screen special effects.Read more ›

The remastering is so good this film looks like it was shot in 2017, not over 45 years ago.Published 14 days ago by robredz
