Richard T. Kelly's Ten Bad Dates with De Niro: A Book of Alternative Movie Lists is a splendidly witty, diverting and charmingly illustrated gift book of alternative films top tens.
Is Richard E. Grant's "Withnail" a far superior screen drunk to Jimmy Stewart in "Harvey"? What is cinema's most tragic farewell, its most ingenious plot-twist, its most shocking murder? And why do Robert De Niro's characters behave so badly to women? All film fans keep mental records of their movie-going tastes, and their post-show arguments in the pub. This book is a rollicking collection of such 'Top Tens', contributed by a fine cast of leading film writers, acclaimed film-makers and novelists from Steven Soderbergh and the Coen Brothers to Gilbert Adair and DBC Pierre. If you want to know the Ten Most-Deserved Oscars or Ten So-Called 'Turkeys' that are actually brilliant, then look no further, "Ten Bad Dates With De Niro" could be your perfect match.See all Product description

I'm not a huge movie buff knowing all the ins and outs of films and their histories, and you don't have to be to enjoy this. I found in here films I had never heard of as well as ones I have, films I've never seen, or ones that I last saw years ago, so this does bring back a bit of nostalgia to any reader of this. That is one of the things I think that makes this book work, as well as what the lists include. This isn't a book of lists of best films in each genre; it is something a bit more irreverent. The title of this refers to films where Robert De Niro has played characters that women would not want to go out with. Along with lists of bad hair days and bad wigs, you also have best real sex scenes, and gratuitous nudity as well as best music or best films within a film and best gang movies. The lists just go on and on.
This is a collaborative effort and each film listed has what it is that has made it on to the list, as well as a short introduction to each section. In all this is full of facts and humour meaning that you won't get bored. Ideal to look at with friends around, some drinks and some of the films mentioned, you could end up making your own film club whilst you discuss the merits of the films here, and what you think should be on the list. This isn't something that I would normally look at, but I found this really absorbing.
The lists (compiled by film-makers, film critics and just plain old film watchers) are varied and interesting (from the Ten Most Richly Deserved Oscars to Ten Worst Haircuts) and written with enthusiasm, wit and intelligence.
It's like having a night in the pub with your friends who know a lot about films but don't limit their viewing to art house retrospectives. Brilliant - and a great present for anyone who knows a bit about films and wants to enjoy finding out more.
