5.0 out of 5 stars This Is a Wonderful Read 17 Jun. 2015

In Tempting Hope Tarr goes beyond and beneath the usual Regency Romance story and gives us something fresh and substantive. First of all the hero Simon Belleville – while he’s drop dead gorgeous and fabulously wealthy – is also Jewish and he didn’t come by his wealth from inheriting it. He earned it. He also has a brutal secret in his past that causes him great guilt and makes him understandably angry instead of just angry for the sake of making it look like there’s a conflict as is the case in too many novels. Simon meets the heroine Christine in a brothel which ignites delicious misunderstandings between them. But she’s not the usual heroine either. She isn’t voluptuous she’s skinny – as we’d expect of a young woman in such desperate and impoverished circumstances that she’s in a brothel in the first place. Next Tarr gets us into one of my favorite story lines – the My Fair Lady/Cinderella/Rags to Riches Makeover story – and that’s delicious too. Except that both Simon and Christine have serious issues with each other and within themselves and that gives the story true substance. This is a wonderful read. I highly recommend it. 5.0 out of 5 stars A must read book 24 May 2012

I have been reading a lot of books but this really touched me. This is a five star book without any doubt even though i do have some things i would have loved to be portrayed better. I love the tragic beginning even though it tears my heart, but from there I already knew the novel was going to give me pleasant day. Simon Belleville, is a character i definitely liked, one with a difficult past, very focused, disciplined, a hard worker, very organized and knew supposedly what he wanted or should be good for him. He is a believer of perfection generally. On the other hand, Christine is a spontaneous person, honest, hardworking, a fighter and a sentimentalist.
Simon is the queen`s appointed morality commissioner, trying to eliminate all forms of prostitution, they break into brothels and lock up all the occupants in newgate at the gaol. This is where Simon meets Christine in the attic of a brothel.Instead of taking her to newgate, he takes her to his home as his cousin, cleans her up and sends her to his old mistress` school of young ladies. Simon is running as the mayor of Maidstone and need no scandal associated with his name, but gradually he starts falling in love with Christine but is not willing to call those emotions love. Christine is more open and shows her feelings towards simon, her appreciation. A must read novel, and i love the character of Margot, Simon`s ex mistress and Rebecca though she suffers From PTSD and multiple personality disorder, her recovery proves she will be a passionate person.
I love the fact Christine, stood her grounds with Simon so he will accept her for who she is and not what he wants her to be. I was disappointed with the intimate part, it was suppose to be intense but it wasn`t, i really wanted that part to be detailed, knowing how long Simon has been dreaming of that. Also would have loved to have an epilogue, with long term expectations, but so far the book was excellent. Hope others enjoy it as much as i did.
5.0 out of 5 stars This Cinderella Kicks Butt! 23 May 2012

Christine is not your typical romance novel heroine pining away for her Prince Charming to come rescue her. Whether she likes it or not that is exactly what Simon is trying to do. Oh, she goes along with him for awhile but our little Cinderella puts her foot down when Prince Charming puts on his arrogant ways. Simon, was born to a noble family but Simon's father married the Jewish housemaid and his father an earl took him and any children he would have out of his will. Simon slowly makes his way back up to the top of society from living on the streets, dealing with his sister's rape and thereafter mental breakdown. Our prince makes himself a prince by working for a living going through hardships all for his family. He wants to help Christine do the same. She has a sister and brothers in hiding to support, as her evil cousin took over the family farm and brutalized her and her siblings. Not putting up with it any longer Christine defends herself hitting him with a fireplace poker. She hides her family and takes off to London for honest work. Trouble soon finds her and it soon comes the meeting of her prince to rescue her. He continues to keep trying to rescue her but this Cinderella feels she can rescue herself just fine on her own. What she doesn't realize is this Prince needs a Cinderella to rescue him! I'm very, very, very, picky about how many stars I give out. It's very rare that I give out 4 stars -really liked it or 5 stars loved it. 3 stars means I liked it okay. 2 stars I didn't like it. 1 star I hated it. I use the Netflix starring system. This book fell under loved it. I would read it over and over and over again and not get bored. It was very well written along the lines of Julia Quinn, Mary Balogh, Stephanie Laurens, etc. I've never read anything of this author before nor even heard of her. I found her scrolling through Amazon. At 99 cents this book was truly a steal! I've bought others for $8 that weren't nearly as good. I'll be looking for more books by this author. So should you starting with this great story.
5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Victorian Romance (A- Grade) 26 Feb. 2012

Hope Tarr's Tempting was published in 2002 by Jove and now Hope has self-published Tempting for .99 cents on Amazon. This is now my favorite book by Tarr set in the Victorian era with a Jewish hero who becomes a very rich and powerful man and falls for a poor, country girl who was tricked into forced into a brothel.

Simon Belleville blames himself for the rape of his sister by two men when they were teenagers. His sister's mind became broken because of it and she lives in a fantasy world. Simon is a self made man of important and is the head of Her Majesty's Morality and Vice Commission and raids brothels. On his recent raid, he finds a bruised and sick young woman locked in the attic. Christine left the countryside and came to London to find work after her nasty cousin tried to rape her. Christine was trying to find honest work, but Simon doesn't believe it. He believes she's been abused and possibility violated. He goes against everything and takes her into his home to recover. Something about Christine makes him want to protect her, so much so he'll pay for her schooling so she can learn decorum and proper etiquette and perhaps get a job as a governess. But Simon can't remain separated from Christine for long because he misses her. He takes her to his country estate where she learns the truth about the real man hiding behind a mask he shows the world.

Tempting is a must read for any historical romance fan. It has an almost old school romance feel to it with Simon being older than Christine by fifteen years and how he likes to control the situation in a somewhat highhanded manner. But Hope has a nice twist regarding Simon, in that he's a combination of a beta-alpha whose entire protective instincts come out in regards to Christine who after all she's been through doesn't cower in fear. The buildup of tension and attraction between these two are well done. There's only one love scene, but WOW, it's hot and steamy.

Tempting is all about being true to one's self. Christine isn't ashamed from where she has come from and Simon may hate his poor roots and almost rejects his heritage, but he loves his step-father who saved his mother and his sister from living on the streets. Simon is a man with wonderful principals you can't help but admire, and he needs someone like Christine in his life.

Tempting gets an A- from me and one that's staying on my keeper shelf. Seriously, the price for Tempting is quite the steal. Buy it now.

5.0 out of 5 stars A truly enjoyable read! 30 May 2012

What a truly enjoyable read!

You will not be disappointed once you meet the two important characters in the story. You will empathize with Simon and Christine because of their background, their wants, needs and most importantly their flaws. The dialogues are not too melodramatic, just right and some lines just made me laughed out loud. I am more of a reader than a writer but I am giving my review because I believe the book deserves it and it just a nice book to read. I found myself not letting my Kindle go until I finished the story.
