I've thoroughly enjoyed every book in the Riley Jenson series so far, but Tempting Evil is officially my favourite now. Half-werewolf, half-vampire, Rily has gone undercover for the Directorate of Other Races in a high-risk plot to bring down Deshon Starr. Starr is responsible for a myriad of clones and dangerous lab-bred monsters that have been tormenting Riley and her friends since book one, Full Moon Rising.

Arthur ups the stakes in this book as Riley is thrown headfirst into Starr's twisted world, where women are forced to fight for Starr's entertainment, rape is an everyday occurance and the slightest trangression is punishable in horrific ways. She's surrounded by people she can't trust, all of whom have their own agendas, and her psychic powers are developing in new, sinister ways. Throw in some romantic tension between Riley and part-time lover Quinn the vampire, and you have a non-stop, explosive ride.

Unfortunately, two elements kept me from giving this book five stars. The first is the number of times the phrase "my hormones did an excited jig" cropped up. Although it's been established since book one that werewolves are sexually liberated, easily aroused creatures, I was so sick of reading that line or a variant on it that I could have happily slapped Riley and ordered her to a nunnery. The second is her relationship with Quinn. He's proven time and time again throughout the series that he cannot accept her werewolf lifestyle (read: promiscuity) and constantly spits all over her heritage. It seems wrong to me that an intelligent, strong woman like Riley would put up with his essentially racist attitude and insults.

Overlooking those points, this is a great book and, for me, a great antidote to the latest angst-filled Anita Blake books. Pick up the first two, Full Moon Rising and Kissing Sin, and enjoy. Just watch out for the dancing hormones.

Riley Jenson bows to the inevitable and begins to train in bloody earnest in order to become a Guardian for the Directorate of Other Races. Her twin brother Rhoan, also half werewolf/half vampire is already employed in this capacity, working as a conduit between the city's monsters and the ordinary citizens of a multi-cultural Melbourne. The Directorate is keen to further explore Riley's developing psychic abilities which were heightened as a result of her recent capture by the debauched scientist Deshon Starr. Experimented on to the point where she lost a huge chunk of her memory, Riley is keen to bring the brilliant but twisted Starr down. Riley doesn't kid herself however that she is going to be able to stomach what's required to make that happen.

Deshon Starr owns many properties throughout town, some used to disguise the activities of the scientist's labs in which gene pool dabbling is the first order of business. To amuse his own people and visiting investors, Starr regularly puts out a display of hookers, also putting the hardier of the bunch into his own fighting arena with his gene-spliced creations. This is the entry point for Riley, a hardly recognizable version of Riley once her appearance, voice and demeanour have undergone some serious disguising. The delicious vampire Quinn is a concern as he continues on his own path of distracting Riley in many different manners from the task at hand. A werewolf is victim to many desires and Riley is going to have to try very hard to keep a lid on them all in order to get the job done.

Set in an alternate Melbourne after dark, Riley Jenson's world of werewolves, vampires and other shape shifting creatures is brilliantly alive with its throbbing gang-like subculture.

The Directorate has finally convinced Riley to join and become a fully fledged agent and with that send her straight into the Lions den. She is sent into a fight compound, which is run by the psycho Starr, who enjoys watching people suffer and die for his entertainment. Meanwhile she has to deal with a wolf and vampire who want her, then again do they? This is a more laid back approach to the supernatural genre and with less emphasis on the nedroom scenes than Hamilton or Ward, but it is still a great read.

Tempting Evil turns out to be Keri Arthur tempting fate. The story has definitely run its course now. Oh no, I don't mean that this is the end of Riley Jenson. Not at all, there are several more books in the series. However, I don't plan to go anywhere near them if I can avoid it. The Directorate for Other Races finally manages to infiltrate the super secret gene lab that's been spending four decades developing a perfect soldier out of various species, human and otherwise. Riley gets her big break in taking out the mad scientists in this one. The story is full sex, murder, rape and attempts thereof. Riley's lax attitude towards all the violence makes you wonder whether she actually is one of the good guys. For some reason it seems lack of sexual satisfaction is more noteworthy for her than dozens of people witnessing a gang rape for the evenings entertainment. So really all I can say is that in the field of mindless entertainment mindless has taken over the entertainment. Like in so many other series the quality deteriorated unsurprisingly fast and I for one have lost all interest.
