Erin Kellison has started a new series and as usual brings her own unique and dark twist giving an unexpected read. I've long enjoyed reading her Reveler series with it's deep undertones so was very interested to find out what she would bring that's fresh to the dragon type books that seem so popular right now.
Emerson has had a rough life but has found her place in the crazy world she lives in. Her best friend is a wolf shifter but Emerson has always been told she's part dragon and now is considered to be blood kin with all the dubious perks that go with that position. Emerson is skeptical about the existence of dragons but plays along with the fantasists but if truth be told she's so tired of it all and wants nothing more than to slip quietly away. After this one last job that's just what she intends to do. The job? Act as a mediator between the Heolstor family and one very ticked off Thane Ealdian! They all claim the ancient bones discovered belong to them but only one is telling the truth. Emerson is getting sucked into a world that's terrifying and deadly and as the death count rises secrets long kept quiet are finally revealed putting Emerson firmly in the cross hairs!
There's an attraction between the two main characters tha just keeps building . Not exactly instant love admittedly but nevertheless palpable. Thane knows his time on earth is limited and his intense loneliness and descent is offset by his desire for justice. Emerson's naïveté allowed the author to bring depth to the story as her own preset ideas are truly tested. Loved the supporting characters but if honest was shocked by the violence. Would I read more? Of course but I'm a little unsure just where the author might go with this series next. Shorter than I like to read but who doesn't love dragons? I now realise that this story was originally published in the Dark and Damaged box set so that explains the brevity of it.

Dragon shifter Thane Ealdian has been searching for his wife and child for many centuries and now he hears the Night Song and feels his final shift is near. But then the remains of a woman in mid-shift and an infant are discovered in an archeological dig, and now revenge is the only thing on his mind. Then Emerson Clark enters his isolated life and turns it upside down. Emerson is responsible for mediating the claim of the remains between Thane and his rivals the Heolstors. Thane is adamant that they are the murderers but Emerson is not fully convinced of that.

But as Thane and Emerson dig deeper into the circumstance surrounding the end of his family, the truth about betrayal and family come to light, for both of them. In fact Emerson just might be the one to save Thane from a painful destiny.

Emerson wants nothing to do with dragons but Thane, a powerful dragon shifter who has waited 600 years to avenge the loss of his family won’t take no for an answer in this spectacular new paranormal series.

Evidence has come to light and Thane is close to finding out how murdered his family and the reader gets caught up in never ending excitement as Thane and Emerson soon discovers much more. The chemistry between Ember and Thane smolders with vibrant intensity but there is a couple of obstacles in the way of this romance – Thane’s desire for revenge, Ember’s desire to get as from dragons as possible and a deadly enemy’s greed. The characters are strong, enthralling and demand the reader’s attention while the fast paced, smooth flowing plot thrills readers with lots of suspense, action and romance.

Expectation builds lots of tension throughout the story as secrets are revealed, betrayals are discovered and assassins attack at the direction of a powerful enemy set on killing anyone who gets in his way. Vivid images are brought to life by well written scenes and details that make it easy for the reader to picture every scene as it happens and the intriguing events guarantee that the reader can’t put the story down until they have read every last word.

The author has created a fascinating new dragon world with some very interesting and unique characteristics and I have to say that I was completely spellbound from the very beginning and I will be waiting impatiently for the next book.

I received this book from the author in return for a fair and honest review.

This is the first in a new series by Erin Kellison. Her stories are always sharp and to the point, and this one is no different. You will follow Emerson as SHE tries to understand, work with and live with the Bloodkin, otherwise known as Dragon shifters. She was one of those 'lost in the system' and indeed, only flagged up as Bloodkin when she applied for financial aid whilst at college. Completely fed up with the misogynistic view that most Bloodkin appear to have, she decides that she will quit and move after the job she is currently working on is finished.

This leads you to Thane, a 600-year-old Dragon who is fighting the pull of the Night Song. He knows that one more shift and he won't be able to return to his human shape. If this takes place outside of Havyn, then death and destruction will rain down in the human world, starting the persecution of dragons once more.

Emerson is strong and feisty and will not take any crap from anyone. Thane is also strong, set in his ways, a wonderful ally and fearsome foe. Their world will draw you in and keep you intent on turning the pages, one after the other. Some of the other characters deserve a mention, in particular, Matthew. I loved him and his attitude towards Thane. Another one is Bryan, Emerson's foster brother who is also a Wolfkin. I am hoping that he will get his story too.

This is a wonderful story that takes you into the world of shifters, allies, enemies. I personally loved every moment and am looking forward to book 2 in this series. Highly recommended.
