Alexander Drummond, the Marquis of Warrick, is no saint. Descended from a long line of rakes, he vowed to stop dallying with the fairer sex. But now he needs a woman - an extraordinary woman - to tame his wildcat of a daughter. Intelligent, spirited Mary Callahan is the perfect nursemaid for the child, but one look at her bedroom eyes and luscious lips and Alexander is tempted to seduce one last woman. For Mary, masquerading as a nanny and enticing the master of the house is all in a day's work - until stolen kisses and passionate caresses distract her perilous game. Soon two people who know the risk of mixing danger and desire find themselves on the brink of a shocking scandal.
I absolutely adored this book! Alex is a handsome, serious, and often uptight Marquis and heir to a dukedom. He tries so hard to be an upstanding gentleman and peer of the realm, and to distance himself from the rest of his family commonly known as "The Wicked Warricks"... Mary is a beautiful commoner with a Cockney accent. She's frank and often crass in her deeds and comments, but totally hilarious and endearing. She's strong and full of life, but also kind, often insecure (though she'd never admit it) and vulnerable. Mary pries Alex out of his shell, shows him a different side to life, and makes him smile and laugh - two things he doesn't often do. This couple, so utterly different and worlds apart, yet so wonderfully perfect for each other.
TEMPTED was an utterly unique and memorable romance. It's wholly unconventional, especially with Mary's chosen career of circus performing. Add in her pet monkey Abu, along with Alex's raffish father and scoundrel cousin, and its quite unlike anything I've read before. The characters were well fleshed and the passion between Mary and Alex held me in awe. I laughed throughout most of this, expect for the few times I was near tears. It was moving and funny, and just a joy to read. This was my first book by Ms. Britton but certainly not my last. She's only written a handful of historicals and I plan to read them all, including "Scandal" which stars Alex's rakish cousin Rein. Overall it was truly a treat and I cannot recommend it highly enough =)
- a very famous circus performer will drop everything to "go undercover" as a nurse to spy on her father's enemy when she hasn't spoken to her father in years after he killed her beloved horse.
- a straightlaced Marquis will completely act against his lifelong ideals and beliefs when he meets a woman who is outspoken and who is stacked.
- the Marquis is kidnapped from his own home with Bow Street runners in the house and on the property; but, the only person who sees the kidnapping is the erstwhile undercover nurse.
- the Marquis' cousin - a rakehell Earl - will encourage the Marquis to unbend and live a little by marrying a servant.
- the circus performer's father will immediately give up his quest for vengance when his daughter rides to his rescue.
...and the list goes on and on.
A pleasant enough read; but, falls into the area of an ok read that you might do better to check it out from your local library or buy it used.
Alexander Drummond, Marquis of Warrick has a family past that he will live down. He won't be like his ancestors by seducing the servants. He's had no problem with this until he comes face to face with Mary. Mary is a commoner and there to take care of his daughter but he still finds himself thinking about her, dreaming about her...well, you get the picture.
Mary may be a commoner but she is anything but common. Actually she's a trick ride for a circus who just so happens to have a pet monkey Abu and now no thanks to her good for nothing father a nurse for a real little brat. Oh, yeah her boss is making her think things a proper young lady should never think. Never mind that the words that come out of her mouth are rather...colorful!
Can two different people find love despite their station in life?
Colorful characters as well as a different and fun plot made this a fun light read. I highly recommend Ms. Britton as an author to add to your summer reading list.
