Joseph is back with an album proper complete with his backing band and guest starring Garth Hudson from The Band on organ and piano. This is Arthur's seventh studio album and his second with the Astronauts and it has to be said it's amazing. The musicians he has surrounded himself with are extremely talented and really fill out the songs with a full range of instruments at their disposal. Arthur has always had a knack for writing great songs but add in the band and he's on another level. At times on a few of the faster songs he sounds a little like Bob Dylan but I guess that's no bad thing. Songs like `Say Goodbye' with its `if you're gonna leave me you should say goodbye' sing along chorus and `Winter Blades' with its Instant Karma vibe are both classics and from opener and title track `Temporary People' the record is expertly paced. I'm never sure why Arthur isn't as big as Ryan Adams, they share so many similarities, both are very prolific, have great songs and release records solo and with their respective bands but as this is Arthurs most accessible album to date I do hope that changes. If listeners get into Temporary People then they can visit his back catalogue and discover classic albums like `Big City Secrets' and my all time favourite `Come to where I'm from'. Fans will love how Arthur's music is progressing and hopefully it will gain a whole new audience and propel him to where he should be. If you like good music then you will like `Temporary People' as its much better than almost everything else around at the moment.

HASH(0x9e079bc4) out of 5 stars Great from the studio, even better live 30 Oct. 2008
By Jennifer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I got to see this tour live at a small venue in Covington, KY a week ago today. Wasn't sure if we were going to get to go until the very last minute but we did and at 9pm the tall guy himself walked onto the stage with the Lonely Astronauts and treated us to an incendiary opening to the title song. WOW! I saw them live for the first time in Spring 2007 and was worried that this show/music may not live up to my first one- no worries! Joseph Arthur had a new guitar, the band had this new album and they do not disappoint their fans.

About these songs- the arrangements are complex and the lyrics are compelling. This is not the pared down, beautiful sound of JA's solo efforts. This is the product of a (prolific) band that has really gelled together in the past few years. You really have to listen to this music over and over. On the first listen I heard the music (which my best friend Leigh who also loves this band best decribed as "tough") then I started listening to the lyrics. There is a definate juxstaposition of darkness and light, of the ideal and gritty real life heartbreak. There seems to be stark contrast in the hopeless disillusionment of song #4 and the very next song (Look into the Sky), which says

"Look into the sky
look into the sky
look into the sky
and ask for Him"

The overall feel of this album is rock, all the way. As you listen you will hear pieces of light and hope come out of these songs. Questions about God's existence maybe and then alternatively affirmation that He is there. To me that is fascinating. That is like life- facing discouragement and suffocating darkness to suddenly be awed when Light shows up.

My personal favorite song on this album is Winter Blades "....love keeps tumbling down onto us"

WARNING: It is hard not to groove out to these awesome guitar riffs when you are in traffic and you may end up looking like a freak or a dork.

HASH(0x9deccf9c) out of 5 stars Fist half is eh, second is Arthur 5 Oct. 2008

I don't knpw what is going on with the first part of this album. Not the strong writing and delivery I expect from Joseph Arthur. Almost like quick dash offs for music class. Or the Michael Stipe rendition of Joseph Arthur song - in the wrong skin. Still leaps and bounds above many others, the rock and roll of the album just before this is sooo much better.

this album is one of the best of the year!!! joseph arthur is an amazing singer songwriter! I have seen him live several times between 2001 era and now! He is very unique in his live performances and recording!!! Thats what is so great about him. His music is fresh and just raw as hell. Bottom line...just pick up the album if ur into acoustic classic rock!!!!

HASH(0x9e00418c) out of 5 stars One of the best albums I have ever listened to. 15 Feb. 2011

I first discovered Joseph Arthur in 2004. I didn't think he could ever out do Redemption's son, but he I feel this one is just as good. It has also stood the test of time and I have not grown tired of listening to it, in fact, it gets better with each listen. I also love the video for Faith. Just buy it, you will not be disappointed.
