I picked this up as a teenager and it swallowed me whole. I have had 3 copies pass through my hands over the years and it proves the saying - Never be a lender because I have never got them back.
If you want a readable way to view the events of perhaps the single most important turning point in history this is the book and it is written in such easy language that the story flow from the page.

Good luck and happy reading.

I paid 6d the first time I bought this in the early 70's, I just paid £25 and I'm still happy. This is not a history text it is a novel. I cannot quote on it's authenticity (can anyone nearly 2,500 yrs later) but it follows events as I have heard elsewhere. This is not just about Thermopylae , the last stand is over in 45 pages (but unlike "300" 300 [2007] [DVD] it does give credit to other Greeks) but the whole campaign. It's a rollicking good read and gives what I feel an accurate view of ancient battles both land and naval.

Brilliant, I bought the paperback in the '70's and still have it although the cover is no longer attached to the rest of the book :-) I bought a hardback copy of the book some years ago and that's the one I return to every year or so. Can't recommend this too highly if you are interested in a rollicking good read and/or Greek history. Mr Milton sticks as closely to history as possible I think while still producing a cracking good read. Covers all four battles of the Persian war of 480/479 B.C. although the naval one of Artemisium is more mentioned in passing that described in any detail. Treat yourself and get a copy!
