Georg Philipp Telemann (1681 - 1767) holds the record (Guinness World Records) for the most prolific composer in history, in terms of surviving works at least. His total is estimated at more than 3,000 compositions.

Born in Germany into a mainly non-musical family he received little encouragement from his family, even to the extent of having his instruments confiscated by his mother who then sent him to study law in pursuit of a proper career.

Unperturbed, the young musician learnt an array of instruments - violin, viola, oboe, flute, organ, trombone and recorder - largely by self teaching. In true `child prodigy' style, while he was at a young age he abandoned the wishes of his family and travelled extensively in pursuit of his real passion, music.

The success story is a long one, and while the music on this 4 CD can give only a small example of his music, it typifies his extraordinary ability to write such influential works for the chamber orchestra. The performances are by the popular Dutch ensemble Musica Amphion, led by Pieter-Jan Belder, recorded in 2003.

The set is supplied in a slim line cardboard box with an 8 page book (all in English) with details of Telemann and the Musica Amphion. It's essential listening, particularly as it is available at mid-price on the Brilliant Classics label.

(Recommended further listening of the Musica Amphion is `Corelli Complete Works' a 10CD set also on the Brilliant label)

Georg Telemann was born four years before Johann Sebastian Bach and was, in fact, godfather to Bach's second son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach. Telemann taught himself to play: harpsichord, organ, recorder, flute, oboe, chalumeau, (a forerunner of the clarinet), viola da gamba, double bass and bass trombone and his knowledge of these instruments gave authority to his compositions and helped him create imaginative and colourful sounds from the varied combination of instruments. Although German, he was influenced very much by Antonio Vivaldi and the Italian school and Tafelmusik, although still carrying the distinctive hallmark of Telemann, reflects this influence.

Tafelmusik was a bold and imaginative project of music for three "Productions", each comprising: a suite, a quartet, a concerto, a trio, a solo and a conclusion. Noblemen, Cardinals and other well-to-do folk could buy the music and get their own, or local. musicians to play it by way of an entertainment. Even Handel purchased a copy in London.

There are some very inventive instrumental combinations and the movements are usually paired, one fast and one slow.

Production I seems a little light-weight, being scored mainly for flutes, strings and bass continuo, but Productions II and III have a greater variety of instrumental voices The highlights are: Suite in D major for oboe, trumpet, strings and bass continuo from II and Suite in B flat major for two oboes, bassoon, strings and bc. and the Concerto in E flat major for two horns, strings and bc. from Production III.

The four CDs range in length from 56-69 minutes of music. Production I is the longest and naturally spans two CDs but, rather irritatingly, the Suite of Production II is on the second CD and the rest of the Production on the third CD.

Delicious music - appetising playing by Musica Amphion conducted by Pieter-Jan Belder! All the Tafelmusik is contained in this lovely box. There are tasty liner notes. Joie de vivre is evident in the whole of this presentation. There are three main parts to the Tafelmusik and each contains a suite, for a variety of instruments,a quartet, a concerto, a trio sonata and a solo sonata followed by a conclusion. I particularly enjoyed the combination of a recorder, two flutes and basso continuo at the start of the 3rd CD. The continuo playing throughout these performances is excellent and invigorating and exciting. The rhythms, whethter fast or stately, and the dances are lavish entertainment as all the tempi are well-judged and happiness is the end result. This is a true banquet.

This set contains 4 CD's of music for flute, recorder, oboe, trumpet and strings etc. It was composed with the intention that it would be listened to whilst dining - hence tafelmusik or table music. It is easy to listen to and has a feel good factor i love it.

That Telemann sure knows how to play my harpsichord, if you know what I mean.
