On opening the box, I was disappointed with the very poor instruction manual, which certainly didn’t live up to the quality and price of the product. The manual is very small and the paper is of poor quality. Printing is too small, in black and white, and relies too much on poorly drawn graphics.
This is quite a large appliance, but it’s quite attractive, and looks good on a work surface. Control of operation is by a touch panel on the top of the unit. Symbols are rather small, and the touch areas are not very well defined, making it difficult to select the required programme. However, there is plenty of opportunity to override the default settings to suit your personal preferences.
That’s the negatives out of the way. Where this fryer really excels is at cooking chips, which is all I’ve tried to date. Frozen, crinkle cut oven chips came out crisp and golden and the favour was better than I’ve ever tasted from oven cooked chips. I will be trying other foods in due course.
The chip programme suggest removing the basket half way through cooking to shake the chips for more even results. This was very handy as I realised that the programmed cooking time would have over-cooked the chips, so I stopped cooking a couple of minutes before the end. Perfect, and I was surprised how much fat there was in the bottom of the basket below the trivet. What’s handy is that when you replace the basket, the programme resumes from where it stopped.
Although there are some shortcomings, this fryer is worth every penny for the way it cooks perfect chips.
I'm assuming all healthy fryers work the same in principle as this, but essentially it is a mini oven - the "frying" is by virtue of the light oil coating. Operation is pretty easy, albeit a little difficult to see as the blue LED touch operated symbols are mounted on the flat glossy surface on the top of the fryer; mounted on a kitchen worktop I can see them, but for my several inches shorter wife they are not as clear. There are a generous selection of pre-configured cooking options - chips (chipped food generally), fish, roasts, etc. and these set the temperature and timer. There is also the option to set these yourself to whatever suits - something you'll get used to with experience - but the presets are generally fairly accurate. During cooking a very large, very clear, front-mounted display lets you know the temperature and remaining cooking time; the oven also emits a fairly loud beep when the cooking time is complete.
In general food does cook quite quickly in this oven and this could be especially welcome for a single person, keeping cooking time, and the bills, down; however it does seem to take rather a long time to preheat, at least 50% longer than my normal oven to 180C for example.
Cleaning is very easy; the drawer is a very good non-stick surface with a removable grill and they are both very easy to wash. Also the inside of the oven generally just needs a wipe with a damp soapy cloth to clean.
I'm not sure quite how often I would use this though; I can see its advantages for someone cooking for themselves or maybe in a caravan, or those odd occasions when you just need an extra, even a small, oven - Christmas for example - but ordinarily it's more of a gimmick than much practical use. However, it is versatile, easy to clean, effective and cheap to run.
OK, here's my thoughts when we cooked a batch of chips cut from potatoes (i.e. not frozen oven chips ...)
* The controls are easy to use - the temperature gauge beeps after the machine is hot enough and it's easy to adjust accordingly: 5/10/15 mins
* It requires the minimum amount of oil to function
* It's ideal for cooking frozen convenience foods
* It depends on your diet really, but if you're not a fan of frozen food then it's a bit of a white elephant
* It's pretty big, gets really hot and takes up quite a lot of counter space (plus it needs venting!!)
* The real potato chips we cooked were a bit uneven and slightly disappointing
* I wouldn't wish to pay the RRP for a product which only had a limited use in one's kitchen
I'll let you know more once I've cooked an easy TV dinner consisting of frozen food ...
