Pretty reliable, no major problems after 6 weeks

Have had this for about 6 weeks, running wireless internet on my old mac G5 tower (OS 10.5.8). It seems to work very well, and is tiny and discrete (beware you don't leave it in clutter as you could lose it! ;)). At very first, after plugging it in to set it up, I had a few problems getting a connection - nothing very specific, it just showed that the internet was connected with good signal strength, when safari said that the computer was not connected to the internet - but it didn't take too long playing around, checking I had the right network, disconnecting and reconnecting etc to get it working (the adapter has its own little controller window, separate to mac system preferences, which is very useful. Do be aware that this looked different on my mac to how it looked in the instruction booklet though, which appeared to be geared towards pc in terms of its example images). Since then I have not really had any issues; it had trouble reconnecting after I had switched it off deliberately on one occasion only. Other than that, no problems; I've been using drop box, Youtube, Hotmail, online payments etc, all fine.

There are just three issues with this adapter, none of which are Windows related.

The first is cosmetic: The RealTek WLAN Client Utility for Mac is butt-ugly and has to start every time you boot. You can close it as soon as it's initialized so not a big deal.

The second is that the uninstaller script no longer matches the install footprint and leaves the kext in place (which is pretty serious if you're trying to debug a kernel panic).

The third is that the RTL8192SUs kext, although certified for 64-bit, will cause a kernel panic as soon as it's invoked with the 64-bit kernel. Upon investigation I've learned that Ubuntu 64-bit users have reported exactly the same problem, so there you go.

*** Conclusion ***
Windows7 x64 was fine.
Mac 10.6.4 (32-bit kernel) was fine, if ugly.
Mac 10.6.4 (64-bit kernel) was a total fail.
Linux distros (64-bit kernel) probably a total fail (I can't confirm though).

A good linux consort

While buying this usb adapter, one of the primary motives was to have a wireless connection for my linux and MAC (Tiger & Leopard) machines. Normally I use ubuntu (and some times SuSE and debian) and it has been doing absolutely fine (on ubuntu but it should work in any linux and unix distribution because there is nothing debian specific here). Interestingly enough, it seems that the linux connection is even better than windows (XP) in terms of speed! Here is an advice on setting it. You do not need to uninstall the GUI network-manager (as some have suggested) but the compensation for that is having to manually start the wifi connection every time from the terminal ('sudo ifconfig wlan0 up'; or simply 'ifconfig wlan0 up' from the superuser mode). If you are not happy to do that, you have two options: deactivate the network-manager ('sudo apt-get autoremove network-manager') or alternatively change the fstab configuration (none of which I perfer, because with the network manager I can check the speed, etc in a giffy instead of having to type 'iwconfig', etc every other time). The other advice is to request for the most recent driver from the LM guys because the old driver, as came with my CD, works only up to kernel 2.6.30 (eg. ubuntu 9.04) AND NOT with 2.6.32 (ubuntu 9.10 and above). But that is not a problem because the LM customer service is very nice and prompt. All in all, here is a product I would strongly recommend especially for the linux users (and for windows & MAC too).

Macbook 13" - Overheats and stops working

I persevered with this for a month trying to download latest drivers for OS X 10.6 hoping this would solve problem. Nothing worked, it would connect for 20 minutes or so and then it seemed to overheat. I though it was the computer's heat causing the problem so I bought a length of USB cable to distance the adaptor from the computer, this did not solve problem as the adaptor could not draw enough power to switch on!

Summary:
- Bought for Macbook 13" with faulty built-in wifi card
- Driver needs to be activated each time computer wakes from sleep (The driver also has the ugliest dock icon)
- Works well for a while and then seems to overheat
- Yes, it's an excellent size but...see above

It's day one of my replacement adaptor bought from Amazon - Edimax EW-7711UAN 11n 150mbs Wireless High Gain USB Adapter . It's chunky but reassuringly good build. This did require installation of driver off their web page to get it started. Now it's working well even waking automatically after sleep.

This is a good, useful product, delivery affected by pre-Christmas poor weather (I don't hold the vendor responsible for this). However, I bought it because it indicates that Linux drivers are available from the manufacturer. While Ubuntu 8.04 is provided as the version on the box, I expected upgrades to be available, but it seems this is not the case. The source does not compile on Ubuntu 10.4, and although I managed to get the card working (using drivers provided from other sources), there was a substantial effort involved. I would have preferred it if the manufacturer kept up-to-date drivers available. But once working, it was exactly what I wanted.

This Mini USB Wireless adapter is the second one of these I have bought; the first was so good, and now even cheaper. It is faster than any other Adapter I have used, including installed cards.
It also worked with Windows 7, as well as Vista and XP, 32Bit & 64Bit.
With Linux, although advertised as compatible with Ubuntu 8.04, it worked immediately with Ubuntu 11.10.
With Ubuntu versions from 9.10 to 11.04, I had to install new drivers, but then it worked well on all of them: being recognizedand connecting as soon as plugged in.

Though the Vendor is Lm Technologies, the chip set is RealTek RTL8188SU.
