Product description
The latest version of the iconic BL700N battery charge utilises very high specification components throughout which results in a device of the highest professional standard. This genuine Technoline unit ** should not be confused with copy products with similar functionality which have no association with Technoline whatsoever **. The BL-700N battery charger has four independent charging channels each of which allow for independent charging, discharging, refreshing or testing of any AA or AAA rechargeable battery, both NiCd and NiMH. Perfect for charging odd numbers of batteries (1,2,3 or 4) Each battery slot has its own LCD providing real time information relating to the status of every battery so you can view actual charge/discharge current, terminal voltage, accumulated mAh and elapsed time per cell. You can perform different functions on each battery simultaneously. You can set the charge current at different levels for each of the four batteries and you can also charge different sizes (AA or AAA) at the same time. Select the charge current of your choice for a gentle or fast charge at either 200mA, 500mA, 700mA. Charging is specifically limited to a maximum of 700mA which is designed to protect your batteries from damaging over charging which reduces the life of modern low self discharge batteries. The Refresh Mode does a very good job of reviving tired, neglected or abused batteries by automatically charging and discharging until optimum performance is achieved. This charger is perfect for matching batteries into similarly performing sets and does an excellent job of identifying failing cells within a set. Supplied with a 12 month manufacturers warranty and suitable for charging any NiMH or NiCd rechargeable AA/AAA battery with capacity up to 3000mAh. UK version, UK power supply.

The BL700N is an update to the previous BL700 model, which had some serious firmware bugs that could easily destroy your batteries. Now that Technoline have finally fixed those, this is a great charger.
Of the four charging modes it has, I mainly use the Discharge function, which first discharges the batteries (as you might expect), pauses a while, charges them all up, then switches to standby trickle-charge until you remove them. I don't know what the pause is for, because the BL700 didn't do that. Presumably there's a good reason for it.
As with the BL700, the BL700N processes each battery individually, rather than applying the same treatment to each, regardless.
I previously used the Refresh function quite a lot, but that was only because my earlier BL700's botched things up so badly. I've discontinued using my BL700's now (two broke of their own accord, and the third has a failed channel), so I no longer need the Refresh function, it seems. I hope my BL700N's don't have these reliability problems (too soon to tell yet). I use a surge-protected socket now. Given that battery chargers are likely to be mains-connected for long time periods, this is a good idea.
With the BL700 you had to press the buttons very hard to make them operate, but that is fixed in this version. Another improvement is you can do what you want with slightly fewer button presses.
Compared to the BL700's power supply unit, this one's is much more compact. This is a good thing if using several at once. They easily fit next to each other in closely-spaced power sockets, and stay cool in operation. You will hear high-pitched pulsing if you are close to them.
I've used many different battery chargers over the years, including much more expensive ones, and the BL700N is better than any of them. I could say some really bad things about the earlier BL700, but that isn't what this review is about. In short, the BL700N is all good now, with no major faults or even minor niggles to complain about.
I only use it to charge my wireless keyboard and mouse batteries, so you can imagine that it hasn't been used every day.
A little while ago I noticed that my batteries were not really full anymore, and I found out why:
Slot 1, 3 and 4 always pretend the battery is charged after about 15 minutes.
Slot 2 almost never stop. I caught it charging double the capacity of my battery.
That was working well until the expiry date. They're always good at that.
First thing first - the material it's covered with, will degrade and become sticky. So sticky, that you can't wash it away and will have to wash hands every time you touch this device. You've been warned.
This charger allows you maximum 700mAh charge, which is OK, but you should aim at 0.5 of your battery maximum capacity. E.g. if max. capacity of Eneloop Pro AA is 2000mAh, your charger should deliver 1000-2000 to charge it properly. The problem of lower charge (e.g. default 200mAh) is that charger may not know when to stop, and you'll end up with overcharged hot battery. There is another model, that is allowing 1000mAh, it's more expensive but you might like it better.
You may find, time after time, that your battery doesn't register in this charger, i.e. it is showing "null", as if it's absent. This may indicate, that your device discharged it below safe minimum. Some cheap lights might do that easily, so make sure you don't use expensive batteries with them. In that case, you might need a second, dumb charger, like my 20 years old Sony. Put it into simple charger for a minute or two, so it would get enough current to register in Technoline, which will take it from there.
Another advise - don't store your batteries discharged for long, and when you are buying rechargeable batteries, charge them asap for the first time, especially if these are not the top brands.
Other than that, I find this charger good and reliable.
The first one I had never worked at all (DOA). The second one was good while it lasted but that was only for five months of light use. When it failed the second one also was quite dead so there's clearly a chance that it's the power supply at fault but I didn't feel inclined to test that further. I won't be trying a third.
What I liked about this product was it could bring older batteries back to life, where other chargers couldn't. The readout also provides helpful information. It gives the appearance of being well made..... however..... despite very moderate and careful use for around 15 months , it has now completely failed and is outside warranty - making it useless.
Having paid around £35 for such a small amount of use, I cannot recommend this product and suggest you avoid.
