Louie Lasky - Teasin' Brown Blues
Louie Lasky, g, v Chicago Apr 1935 Vocalion 2955
No biographical details have emerged about Lasky, and after cutting six songs for Vocalion in 1935 he seems to have disappeared without trace. He somehow manages to get the sound of a distorted electric guitar on this track, although this may have something to do with the recording quality. The boogie riff is borrowed from Big Bill Broonzy's 1930 recording of How You Want It Done, but here it is given more of a rhumba feel. Latin rhythms did not really come to prominence until Professor Longhair started to record in New Orleans in the 1940s, which may give a clue as to Lasky's origins .The flat-picking boogie rag style of playing was beginning to sound a bit dated in Chicago in the mid 1930s, but it would have its renaissance in Memphis some twenty years later.
