By Peter Uys HALL OF FAMETOP 500 REVIEWER on 2 April 2003
Format: Audio CD
This legendary album contains at least four classics: Rubylove with its prominent bouzouki and verses sung in Greek is atmospheric and beautiful; Morning Has Broken sounds like a medieval hymn, a gentle lilting ballad with spiritual undertones; Moonshadow is a moving and melodic love song, while Peace Train, though less immediate, will grow on you. I don't know if Cat Stevens can be considered a "heavyweight" in the singer/songwriter genre, but he ceretainly reached a creative peak with these beautiful compositions. Never quite as melancholy as Nick Drake, nor as psychedelic as Donovan, Stevens touched all the right chords here with these simple but timeless songs, the sparse backing and his lovely vocals. This is definitely his best album and the music has stood the test of time very well.

*** 2009 2CD DELUXE EDITION REVIEW ***

Already a four-album veteran by the time he reached 1971 (2 Sixties efforts for Decca and two more mature outings for Island Records) – Cat Stevens launched "Teaser And The Firecat" in September of 1971 in its tactile matt gatefold sleeve. As lovely as albums get – "Peace Train", "Moonshadow" and the almost Gospel-ancient "Morning Has Broken" number only three of its many charms.

And like the albums "Mona Bone Jakon" and "Tea For The Tillerman" from 1970 that preceded it (April and November) – the new LP from the handsome Greek Troubadour only cemented what many already knew in bedsits all around the world – here was a singer-songwriter with massive crossover appeal hitting his stride. "Jakon" was good with moments of brilliance (a step away from the sheer Pop of "Matthew And Son") while only six months later "Tillerman" showed huge progress in "Sad Lisa", "Longer Boats", "On The Road To Find Out" and the cross-generational song "Father And Son". But you could argue that "Teaser" is his first 'perfect' album - it's all good - and much of it way better than you remember.

The single CD remaster came in 2000 as a bare-bones 10-track reissue and that was sweet too – but given their huge and acknowledged popularity - it's hardly surprising then that Universal has chosen both 1970's “Tea For The Tillerman" and 1971's "Teaser And The Firecat" as Cat Stevens catalogue candidates for 'Deluxe Edition' superstardom. And they've done a sweet job on the pair. Here are the Moonshadows...

This is a wonderful re-mastering of an already well-recorded album. If your hi-fi is up to it, be prepared to be impressed with this excellent re-master.

What an absolutely wonderful album! I am currently on my fifth copy (CD). The other four being vinyl and cassettes which subsequently wore out! I loved it the first time heard it 30 years ago and have never tired of listening to it! Every track is an absolute masterpiece. Not only is every track beautifully crafted in the musical sense but every song also has a lot of meaning lyrically and at various times of my life have related to each and every one of them. Not only was this a classic album 30 years ago but new generations (including my son) have been discovering it ever since! If I could only have one album in my collection this would be it!

In my youth Cat was reguarded as the ear candy of for girls in bedsits. Now decades later i have grown to appreciate the purity of his spirit and the sincerely of his quest.
His embrace of islam is loss to us agnostics.
