Product description

From the Back Cover

"Teaching Primary Art is a comprehensive and accessible handbook for the planning, teaching, assessing, and resourcing of art in primary education.  Packed full of information and inspiration - with a good balance between theory and practice - this text will appeal to a wide audience.  Edwards writes with great authority and clarity, acting as a mentor to those new to teaching primary art, and also providing interest and challenge for teachers with more experience.  Highly recommended."
Dr Emese Hall, Lecturer in Art Education, University of Exeter
Teaching Primary Art is an introductory textbook for anyone training to teach and support learning in art in the primary school.  The book first explores the underpinning philosophy and pedagogy of teaching and learning art, including why we teach art, planning and assessment, suggestions for linking art with other subjects, and teaching and support strategies.  The author then covers the practical aspects of teaching art, such as drawing, printmaking and working in 3D.
The book contains features including:
  • Practical tasks designed to support your own investigation and reflection.  For students these tasks can be undertaken on placement in school.  For those working in schools the tasks can be related directly to finding out more about policy and practice in order to develop your understanding of art in your workplace.
  • Find out more suggestions point you in the direction of further resources to support your own subject knowledge or your teaching in the classroom.
  • Connect and extend suggestions encourage you to use academic literature to investigate further.  They indicate reports, research and academic journal articles of interest that underpin subject knowledge and practice in art education.
  • Links to material on a companion website include the practical task materials, links to resources such as images and websites and examples to support your teaching.
This book offers practical activities, case studies and suggestions for taking learning further to help readers to develop and extend their own subject knowledge and pedagogical understanding.
