Excellent renderings of both pieces. The Bruckner is lovely - not at all excessively monumental, very approachable (I speak as a Bruckner fan). Clear open recording. They feel all the better for not being performed by a big slick orchestra and choir, just very good ones; the soloists are excellent. Total timing not generous however, but not a problem at this price.

I was looking for Verdi's Te Deum when I found this recording which also includes Bruckner's. This Te Deum fest is right up my street as i'm sure it will be for anyone looking for this music genre.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bruckner shines 21 Mar. 2010
By T. Fisher - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I have always had a hard time really getting into Bruckner. His symphonies seem kind of heavy and ponderous, and perhaps I just haven't had time to just sit and really listen to them as carefully and patiently as I should. At any rate, I was a little skeptical coming in to this disc, but I was determined to give it a careful, open-minded hearing.

Well, any misgivings were completely unfounded. Bruckner's "Te Deum" is really fantastic. An exciting work, delivered in a terrific performance here by the Philharmonia Hungaria, the Choir of the Musikverein in Bielefield, and four excellent vocal soloists.

I don't have any other recordings of the Bruckner, so I haven't done any comparison listening. But this interpretation is easy to love. The first track is a string-driven "Te Deum" proper that really shines, as does the short, brass-laden third track "Aeterna fac". My favorite may be track 4, "Salvum fac", where the vocals delicately intertwine with a solo violin.

I'm not going to call it a modern work, but I did feel Bruckner was starting to peek into what would come later -- at least, perhaps, into something along the lines of Mahler. It feels quite forward-looking for the 1880s.

The Verdi "Te Deum" is beautiful, but more traditional, even though it was composed more than 10 years after the Bruckner. It felt more backward-looking into older traditions of sacred music. Less exciting than the Bruckner, but still a fine composition.

If I have any bones to pick with this disc, first of all it is taking the Verdi out of context. It was part of a larger work, "Quattro Pezzi Sacri", which also includes an Ave Maria, a Strabat Mater and a Laudi Alla Vergine Maria. However, the goal of the disc appears to be to offer two different Te Deums from the late Romantic to provide a unified theme for the record, so I can accept that. A second nit to pick is that the total running time of the disc is just over 40 minutes.

No matter. Although the Verdi doesn't sparkle quite as much, the Bruckner makes up for it amply. Highly recommended.
