Quite possibly the most exciting new ballet of the past decade, a masterpiece. In retelling the most famous of all love stories, the familiar Prokofiev score has been replaced with music by Tchaikovsky, performed here by the Royal Swedish Orchestra under maestro Alexander Polianichko. As with Mats Ek's previous full length ballet - his highly unconventional Sleeping Beauty - the Royal Swedish Ballet once again proves that it is one of the most accomplished ballet companies in Europe. Special kudos for Ana Laguna (Nurse) and Jerome Marchand (Mercutio). Concerninghe the principal dancers, Mariko Kida as Juliet and Anthony Lumuljo as her Romeo, I doubt that any portrayal (and there have been a great many) of the doomed lovers could ever equal in intensity, poignancy and conviction the performances by Kida and Lumuljo. They are phenomenal. With apologies to the Immortal Bard, "For never was a story of more woe, than that of Mats Ek's Juliet and Romeo."

The filming is good without too many quick cuts between shots and not too many inappropriate close-ups. The sets are ugly and all action takes place at night in what seems to be a derelict industrial landscape with lighting which has obviously not been adapted and brightened for filming. Mats Ek has pared down the story to a minimum and seems to concentrate on the Juliet/Romeo relationship. Many characters are not included and such events which have huge importance in the Shakespeare such as the death of Mercutio are included cursorily. The present day costumes do not help relate the story and there is little differentiation between Capulets and Montagues. The Royal Swedish ballet's corp is excellent if a little divorced from the action. The music is chosen, in the main, very well even if there is a great deal of "bleeding-heart" chunks.
What makes this film worth buying is the choreography and dancing of the two main protagonists. Mariko Kida and Anthony Lomuljo as Juliet and Romeo are wonderful and their pas de deux are beautiful, moving and bring a lump to the throat.

I saw this production in London (Sadler's Wells) and was so immediately drawn to the imaginative choreography of Mats Ek that I soon after purchased the other two ballets available on DVD by him (Giselle and Sleeping Beauty.) I would recommend this to all lovers of ballet since it adds a new retelling to that which is traditionally done particularly in placing the emphasis on the violence between and within the families. .
