Relaxing and easy to meditate too, and it is the type one find themself humming along to if not actually singing

HASH(0x956d7a74) out of 5 stars Wishing for a few distinct words... 22 July 2013

The music on this CD is extraordinarily beautiful. The akathist is a prayer that is traditionally sung while standing, although those who are infirm or very tired or holding babies (within and without) often sit or lean. I bought this CD with the idea that I would be able to enjoy the prayers while keeping my hands busy at home alone and still have the enjoyment of a choir of singers. The music is so beautiful and "high" that it is not possible for me to make out the words without reading them from the sheet and straining to understand. That being the case, I went ahead and got a copy of the same akathist sung by St. Ignatius of Antioch Antiochian Orthodox Christian Mission, for which the words are quite distinct and the singing much simpler.

The talented John Tavener often produces music that is rich and spacious and punctuated by moments of silence that invite contemplation, and I enjoy his work. That was not what I was looking for in this CD, though. This time it was five words in a known tongue -- or maybe a few more.

I am reluctant to discount from the five possible stars, so please understand that my disappointment arises only from my purpose in ordering the piece. I do not disparage the beauty of the singing, but only miss the clarity of the words.
