I bought this book on a recommendation whilst checking a forum on woodwork finishing. If you are new to woodworking or are trying to explore a new method this book has excellent simple to follow detail that clarifies the mystery. I had so many questions before buying this book and now have an exceptional guide book on the subject. The book takes each method of finishing in turn - discusses which woods are a best match - explains technical information in a simple understandable overview for each method and then runs you through step by step on how to achieve your best effect. I used the book to finish a guitar consisting of rosewood, mahogany and ebony - three different wood types - and was always in control. Excellent book. Highly recommended.

Having changed the door frames and doors in my home very successfully, it became my next task to finish this costly investment to the best possible standard, and to arrive at an informed solution I need information, and the subject book did in fact provide a wide range of possibilities which were narrowed down by reading more and more from the book.

The decision was made to use a shellac sanding sealer, which I knew nothing about, but the book provided the 'how to' procedure and it was recommended that a good quality polyeurethane varnish be used on top of the suggested base preparation, which indeed I then applied. The result was 2 coats of sanding sealer and I used three coats of gloss polyeurethane varnish to finish.

My doors are greatly admired and the depth of gloss is astonishing to not only myself but anyone who sees the doors. My wife is especially pleased and wants me to to similarly treat all our window reveals which are all set in mahogany. I say thank you for a wonderfully prepared book that gives the novice painter the knowledge to select what to use and how to use it.

Very extended and complete information about finishing techniques and products.
Just could be better some kind of compendium concerning on compatibility between producs instead of looking here and there in the book in a sort of labyrinth untill you find a recipe that works for you. That's not bad, simply could help as expert suggestions.

i found this book was quite good for the beginner or the amateur in woodworking tasks, but it didn't quite perform as to mention some tips in how to perfect the required techniques for the best finishes.
This book can show you what to expect of the final result when you perform the different finishes but however it was a bit vague in terms of techniques in how to perform them, its a good book if you are learning from scratch and it can be a good keeper but you will need to look elsewhere if you have any doubts about performing some of those finishes to achieve the best result.

A great read, providing a wealth of knowledge, although it is a few years out of date and not 100 percent up todate with current products and they're used. It is still an excellent reference book.
