Shorty Rogers completists will welcome this release of a long-forgotten 1959 album with its unlikely title. It is the last of Shorty's numerous RCA Victor big band and small group albums (1953-1961) to be reissued on CD, not surprisingly, since it is the weakest of the lot, being soundtrack music for a B-Grade Tarzan movie. Yet anything composed and arranged by Shorty Rogers must have merit, and some of the tracks have their moments with occasional brief solos by Frank Rosolino and Shorty. There is a certain sameness about proceedings, with endless percussion work and Kenton-like brass passages from the big band. The best portion of the album comprises 1958 live tracks from another Shorty big band which have more straightforward jazz work. Overall, for completists only.

Back in the fifties I saw the film for which the music on this cd was composed. An lp of it was subsequently issued, and I bought a copy, which I then got rid of.
Fifty years later I was tempted to repurchase the cd of it.It might be the nostalgia effect but although not being anywhere near the best of Shorty's output it is quite acceptable, except, that is,for the inclusion of a 6.5 minute bit of vocal nonsense with Stan Freberg at the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars So glad 10 July 2011

While I never was that impressed with the remake of "Tarzan the Apeman" movie itself, the music that accompanied the movie created an excitement that definitely enhanced the effectiveness of the movie. I was just a 10 year old kid when I saw the movie and been watching the incredible movies starring Gordon Scott as Tarzan and had hoped this one would also be great. No such luck. I bought the album in a close out bin at a local store and took it home and it became my "soundtrack" to reading the Tarzan novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs and it was GREAT at producing just the right effect for this experience. Shorty Rogers and his band mates were consumate professionals who, obviously, had great fun in putting this together and it has great playing and great atmosphere. I can't believe my luck in finding this on CD after all these years. How cool!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Lush Sound 3 Jan. 2012
By Gary Romeo - Published on Amazon.com

The track Paradise Found is worth the cost alone. It is a really lush and beautiful melody. Like the best of Antonio Carlos Jobim. I really liked that cut the best.

The other tunes are likable and the Tarzanic Suite features a sort of medley that includes bits of Paradise Found.

Worth the money.
4.0 out of 5 stars Great Shorty Rogers 10 Feb. 2013

A terrific score for perhaps the worst Tarzan movie ever made, this CD also includes the soundtrack for his appearance with a big band on an L.A. TV program. The bands on this CD are smoking, and since this album has been hard to find, if you are a Rogers fan, this is a no-brainer.
