The first fifteen minutes or so this is like a naff Danielle Steele adaptation (with Gene Hackman). A dull father has trouble getting through to his devil-may-care delinquent son (Matt Dillon), while the mother goes to Paris.
Just as you trying to find the receipt however it suddenly lurges into a decent thriller. The mother is kidnapped on route, dull father turns out to be a former C.I.A agent and the son is left questioning his own family history.
Part of the pleasure of this film is watching Hackman show his true colours to his estranged son. The father son relationsip is well depicted and all the spy jargon is all there. The spy story, while over familar, nonsense still manages to satisfy.
It's too long and far fetched but at it's core is a simple story about family coming together.

This version - the Region 2 version with BEST OF ACTION on the cover - is actually FULL FRAME (stamped on the disc but not mentioned on the box) and so plays like an old TV frame. The audio is in English (original soundtrack) by default.

Target (1985) Gene Hackman Matt Dillon
CBS/PARAMOUNT Region 1 (US Import)

Walter (Gene Hackman) and Chris Lloyd (Matt Dillon) are the distant father and son suddenly swept into a world of international intrigue in this action-packed spy drama directed by Arthur Penn (Little Big Man/Night Moves). The movie spends the first ten minutes introducing the main characters before the story really starts with good acting all round. The picture is a bit grainy but adds to the charm with clear audio.

Gene Hackman plays a great role, aided and abetted by his 'son' Matt Dillon. Hackman's character is a ordinary guy doing his best to raise his family, but he has a hidden past which sees his wife kidnapped in Europe. He and son head off to rescue her and it becomes clear that Dad is not all he was believed to be. This is a good pre-'Taken' story and the Dad-Son relationship is well portrayed. Not as brutal as more modern films but it has its moments.

A classic Gene Hackman film, although somewhat dated now. A young Matt Dillon plays his son, Chris, in this espionage thriller. Gene plays Walter Lloyd aka The Duke, an ex-CIA agent who's past has finally caught up with him. He must travel to Paris to save his kidnapped wife. His teenage son's perception of his father changes completely. As they work together to save their family the father-son bond becomes strong and his son learns his father is not the man he thought he was. Both better and worse.
An enjoyable film this pre-Bourne spy thriller is worth a watch.
