I read the book first which I thoroughly enjoyed so decided to get the DVD - BIG DISSAPPOINTMENT!!! - the film doesn't start till about a third way through the book, so you miss a lot of the plot and you don't get to know the characters as well. The actress who plays Ria was very wet, where as in the book she seems a lot more capable and in control of her life. Andie MacDowell seems to play the same character in all her films, gushy and needy. Sorry big thumps down from me.

I bought this DVD because I love the book, however there was nothing about this film I enjoyed. Apart from Andie McDowell the casting was badly done and the acting not much better. If you are a fan of Maeve Binchy then I do not think you will enjoy this adaptation. For instance Danny is meant to be handsome, charming and charismatic - he failed on all points. Rosemary is meant to be a glamorous, self assured, well groomed etc. She failed on all accounts. The film starts at the time when the marriage between Danny and Ria is ending, this gives you no opportunity to get to know the characters or why the house in Tara Road means so much to Rhea.It makes it difficult to emphasise with the characters and it makes it difficult to understand why Ria would even want Danny back in her life.

Completely untrue to the book! Characters are changed, characters are missing, events happen differently - I found myself saying "That's not how it happened", "That's not what she looks like.", "That's not her character." all the way through - really disappointed! Could have been done much better!

Tara Road is one of my very favourite books and I read it every year. So when I saw this for sale I immediately bought it. Ok, so film usually does not live up to the book, but I thought this just might. However I did not like the heroine, did come come up to my expectations of what I had imagined from the book, and somehow it just never seemed to work. Sad really as the book is fabulous. In future I will be very careful about my choice of film, when it is based on a favourite book. Disappointed.

Thoroughly enjoyable film with some wonderful performances, in particular, Olivia Williams. Can't compare the book to the film.. but how many books / films ever match?

This film was so loosely based on the novel that it was a cheek to call it Tara Road...why didnt they call it House Swap, as that's all it was about, and most of that was inaccurately portrayed. Dreadful adaptation of what was an outstanding story.

Tara Road (2005)

I was very disappointed, the other review said it was close to the book, the only thing I can think is that they haven't read the book!

The entire first half of the book was missing, Colm Meaney was renamed Colm McGuire, Ria wasn't the short dumpy woman she was portrayed to be in the book. It was a serious let down.

If films can't be made to resemble to book it should say loosely based on the novel, as in my opinion it was only loosely based! A nice film for anyone except hardcore Meave Binchy fans

It is impossible to cram all of Maeve Binchey's characters into a film- but this is pretty good. The book is far better and some nuance is lost in the film - but it is a lovely way to spend an afternoon - with a cup of tea and biscuits or a box of chocolates if you feel that way inclined!!
