HASH(0x9ef3d114) out of 5 stars Rescued from Oblivion 4 Jun. 2007
By Dr. Christopher Coleman - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
Tansman was a Polish composer born in 1897, who settled in France when he was 22. He's the perfect example of a composer who, despite a lifetime of tremendous accomplishments and numerous performances, had his work almost completely disappear after his death. There is so much wonderful but unknown music out there, but Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin and the like don't leave much room for it.

In Alexandre Tansman's Triptyque for string quartet, you can hear a strong influence of Ravel, and indeed Tansman knew Ravel, who gave him support and encouragement. But there are numerous other influences in the music presented here, most of which comes toward the end of Tansman's long life--he died in 1986 at 89 years old. I hear a strong influence of the expressionist music of Schoenberg and the folk-influenced music of Bartok, along with the touches of Ravel, and perhaps even a hint of Stravinsky's neo-Classicism. In the Vivace possibile from Tansman's Three Pieces for clarinet, harp, and string quartet, for example, the influence of Bartok is unmistakable--the very fast pianissimo growing throughout in a sort of quasi chromatic jungle of flurries.

The clarinet soloist on the CD is Jean-Marc Fessard, who plays with great aplomb. The harpist here is Francis Pierre. I realise this music isn't for everyone, but I find it delightful stuff, beautifully crafted, and I'm sorry that it seems to have disappeared from the concert stage--I've never heard of Alexandre Tansman before I got this CD, and yet he had a wide career and his music was played by major orchestras all over the world. Perhaps its disappearance is due to a lack of a truly individual character--although I enjoy listening to it, I am constantly reminded of works by other, more well-known composers. Again, the influence of Bartok--this time his "Night-Music' style is unmistakeable here in the opening Preludio of his Musique a Six, for clarinet, string quartet and piano.

The Musique a Six is the most substantial work on this CD, consisting of six short movements, for six players; but separate short movements are the standard for this collection of pieces; all four works are multiple movement pieces, only one of which is more than three movements, and only one movement on the disc is longer than 5 minutes--most only two or three. I find it a very listenable disc, and I'm grateful to Naxos and the performers for keeping this music alive. Definitely worth a listen, even a purchase at this price.

HASH(0x9f586c48) out of 5 stars Genuinely interesting music in splendid performances 22 Dec. 2008

This fine disc of chamber music with clarinet brings together works from several stages of Tansman's career. The Musique for clarinet and string quartet is the most recent work, and still shows clear influences from Les Six and neo-classicism. It is a hugely enjoyable work, well crafted and richly polyphonic. Musique à Six is also pretty recent work. It is somewhat more subdued, but still full of vitality. The closest comparison is, perhaps, Martinu, yet the individuality is never in doubt. A splendid work, alternating between lyrical, wistful moments and vivacious fugal parts.

Trois Piéces is scored for clarinet, harp and string quartet are inventive and contrasted music. The Triptyque does not involve the clarinet, but deserves inclusion if only for the compositional mastery displayed. It's structurally cogent, yet full of inventive stylistic variety. Everything is extremely well played and well recorded. Strongly recommended.
HASH(0x9ea0b3a8) out of 5 stars wonderful, angular music 11 April 2011

Tansman was a 20th century composer whose most obvious influence might be the neoclassical style of Stravinsky. I found his orchestral music didn't make an immediate impression, but the chamber music on this disc drew me in immediately. In this music, Tansman creates dense chromatic harmonies, fascinating imitative counterpoint, and idiomatic writing for clarinet. The performances here are also superb. I will be looking for more music by Tansman and revisiting the orchestral music recordings with a better idea of what I should be listening for.
