Product Description

Product Description

It is 2033 and there is no law, mercy or (most importantly) water. Tank Girl (Lori Petty) is a sexy, smart and outspoken warrior woman who decides to take on allcomers in an attempt to liberate enough water for the population. The villainous Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell) decides destroying Tank Girl is the easiest way to retain the monopoly on precious water supplies, but he hasn't reckoned on Tank Girl's loyal sidekick Jet Girl (Naomi Watts), or a troupe of mutant kangaroos...

From Amazon.co.uk

In Tank Girl, director Rachel Talalay's aggressively hip adaptation of the cult comic book, it is 2033 and the earth has been clobbered by a comet; civilization has been destroyed, and it hasn't rained in 11 years. Nearly all the water on the planet is controlled by the evil Water and Power Company, which is in turn controlled by the even more evil Kesslee (Malcolm McDowell). Who stands in the way? Mysterious mutants called the Rippers and, of course, Tank Girl. Lori Petty plays the eponymous, wisecracking, defiant heart of the movie as kind of an inner child gone wild. Unfortunately Petty can't quite carry a movie on her own--her zingers frequently fall flat and she seems to be continually worried that we still like her. Luckily there's Naomi Watts as Jet Girl to save the day: smart, shy and inherently way more appealing than Tank Girl. For all it lacks, Tank Girl is visually an eye-popper, worth watching for the insane set and costume designs alone. --Ali Davis, Amazon.com

When it came out, and ever since, it seems that the film Tank Girl has been universally slated. I feel that this is somewhat harsh. Certainly, if you compare the film with the comics that inspired it (which I have read by the way) then you can definately see a difference between the original and Lori Petty's Tank Girl. Therefore, for a real Tank Girl comic fan there will be disappointment. However, as a film in it's own right, Tank Girl is not half bad. It is set in a post apocalyptic future (this is the only similarity with Mad Max as mentioned in a previous review), however, if you compare every film set in this environment with Mad Max (a fantastic film I must admit) then you might as well compare every sci-fi space movie with Star Wars. Lori Petty acts out Tank Girl with tongue very firmly in cheek and puts in an energetic and lively performance. My favourite moment is the song and dance routine at the Water and Power showgirl club - very funny.
This film does not set out to be something which requires immense brainpower to take in, it's just there to provide enjoyment. This is a film that you do not have to think about, it's bright, fun, has stunning visuals, a great soundtrack and all in all something to chill out in front of.
If you don't take things to seriously and just want a fun action film to watch then Tank Girl might just appeal to you. I know that many out there hated this film but I really enjoyed it and think that Lori Petty is absolutely awesome.
Tank Girl; try it, you might like it!

Tank Girl is the 1995 film adaptation of the cult comic. The plot is about a post apocalyptic future (seemingly Australia) where after a meteor hit's the Earth it doesn't rain again and an evil Corporation, headed by Malcolm McDowell, controls nearly all of the worlds water supply and thus power. The Corporation aims to eliminate any opposition and attacks a punky/hippy like settlement where Tank Girl lives and abducts a little girl who lives there. The rest of the film is her adventures to save the girl and bring down the evil corporation, with the aide of mutated Kangaroo humanoids.
The first half of the film was quite good in a tongue in cheek knockabout way. Reasonably amusing and a bit fun. The second half of the film was diabolically bad and lost it's way big time. It downfall started with the introduction of the Kangaroo people, they were awful their dialogue, their acting the way acted as characters was corny, cringeworthy and embarrassing. They also looked really stupid and when they started to do some stupid dance I was laughing at the embarrassment I was witnessing on my TV screen. The plot became ludicrous after that and a complete mess. Lori Petty in the lead role of Tank Girl got a lot of stick for her acting, but I think she was told to act in that fashion not to take herself seriously and I wasn't bothered by her performance in the film, I will say that at the start her accent wavered between an American accent and an Australian one, which is poor but maybe the film was confused as to where it was set, most of the rest of the cast spoke with Australian accents. Malcolm McDowell as the villain was on auto Pilot keeping his English accent a stereotype and cliche of Hollywood villains, he was neither bad nor good in the role.

This is a fun film that SHOULD NOT be taken seriously, by any stretch of the imagination!
True it isn't 100% like the comic, but then again, which film is ever 100% like the comic or book???
The soundtrack is cool and easy to sing along to! The costumes are wicked (Tank Girl is great to dress up as for a Fancy Dress party as my best friend Jeni will testify to!!)and the story is weird and wonderful!
A must for anyones DVD collection as it is a great fun film!
Watch and prepare to laugh your head off throughout!
Top flick (from one who has over 200 videos/DVD's!!)

I like Art film and this is certainly not one of those. It's an eccentric gimmicky piece of pure enjoyment; as long as you do not take it too seriously. It's quirky like 'Candy,' 'Daisies,' or 'If' or 'The Knack' and whilst it doesn't quite have the plausibility of any of those three, I like it nevertheless, just wouldn't wish to have to write a dissertation to qualify this statement.

I was feeling nostalgic and tried to look for a UK blu-ray version. A friend told me that, for "old" films like this, picture quality isn't greatly improved when transferred so just a DVD would be as good as it gets. I found that the the DVD I ordered is Italian, but I'm able to play it anyway in English.

This film is brilliant! It has everything from action to a song and dance routine (Cole Porter to be exact)
Ok, So if you're looking for a complex plot then don't bother. But if you're looking for a bit of fun then this is up you're street. Petty handles her in-your-face heroine brilliantly and MacDowell appropriately hams up the evil genius role. As far as comic book adaptations go, it could be better, and Tank Girl's character has been greatly toned down for the screen, but the short comic interludes between scenes more than makes up for it, as does the slick ending animation. And I also have to say this film has THE BEST soundtrack Ever, Ranging from the Bjork track playing in the nightclub to Ice T's 'Big Gun'.
So in short. Buy this. Then go and buy the Soundtrack
