The SP 90 mm F2.8 MACRO VC (Model F017) is the most recent release in a successful line of Tamron SP 90mm macro lenses. It redefines the best in advanced features and succeeds a legacy of superior optical performance, with Internal Focus (IF), eBAND and BBAR anti-reflection nano coating. XY-Shift compensation has been added to reinforce VC functionality, further improving image stabilization capabilities at any shooting distance from infinity to macro. Advances in USD control software have also increased AF focusing speed and optimised fine-tuning for various framing conditions. Furthermore, a high standard of Moisture-Proof and Dust-Resistant Construction has been added to prevent intrusion of dust or water droplets. Highly durable, Fluorine Coating is applied to the front element which efficiently prevents condensation and repels smudge-causing substances. Meticulous craftsmanship is demonstrated in every detail of the exterior design of the transformed SP 90mm macro lens. The user is able to see and feel this in the exquisite texture of the metal lens barrel. Filter Size: 62mm, Length (from camera mount): 114.6mm, Diameter: 79mm, Maximum aperture: F/2.8, Minimum aperture F/32, Diaphragm: 9 rounded blades, Lens Construction: 14 elements in 11 groups (inc. XLD and LD elements), Minimum Focus Distance: 0.3m, Max. Magnification Ratio 1:1, Angle of View (diagonal): 27°2' (full-frame format), 17°37' (APS-C format)

As I've come to expect from Tamron (whose lenses I use almost exclusively), the build quality is excellent and the images produced are very sharp. The sharpness is helped by the inclusion of vibration reduction in the lens design, though it should be noted that in macro mode the tiny depth of field is going to be the biggest limitation to producing sharp images - at the minimum focussing distance, hand-holding is extremely difficult because the slightest movement from either the photographer or the subject will render the image blurred.
Distortion is well-controlled, which is to be expected in a prime lens, though it is still very welcome, and edge to edge sharpness is good once you stop the lens down a bit.
As this is a USD lens, with a built-in motor, it will autofocus on even the cheapest of Nikon's DSLRs, but the focussing ring is generously sized if you want to adjust critical focus, or focus completely manually. The only disadvantage to the wide focussing ring is that your hand falls naturally to rest on it, and the slightest movement causes the manual override to engage, potentially knocking the lens out of focus.
Focussing is quickest if you use the focus limiter switch to reduce the range of distances over which the lens has to hunt. There are three settings on the limiter: 0.3m - 0.5m, 0.5m - infinity, and FULL, which covers from 0.3m - infinity. Focussed at 0.3m, the lens offers life-size magnification on a full-frame DSLR sensor. The attached image is probably taken from about 0.4m and hand-held, so not perfectly sharp, but shows the full frame from that distance and gives an idea of the limited depth of field.
The lens is supplied with a bayonet hood and is much smaller and lighter than zoom lenses that cover the same focal length and offer a similar maximum aperture.
Please note that, at the time of writing, the UK importers of Tamron lenses, Intro 2020, are offering a £50 cashback when purchasing this lens, but the terms and conditions limit which suppliers you can buy the lens from and still take advantage of the offer. Please check the Intro2020 website for details.
As a newbie to macro I was unaware of the shallow depth of field these lenses can produce under low light. Something to be aware of if your photographing in Scotland where the sun only graces us with its presence occasionally!
However I would highly recommend, I have already got some stunning images on my first outing with this and I am looking forward to heading to warmer climates to capture some insect images.
good quality never is. The motor is reletively silent which doesn't frighten the bugs when they are being photographed. I prefer to let the buyer
check out the spec as this is often a personal decision. The price from Amazon is very good, the packaging is well designed to protect a delicate piece of kit.
