My interest was to better understand the merchant shipping industry of 19th century Tyneside and my ancestors that were part of it. It gives a concise introduction that is very readable with some well chosen illustrations. It covers a wide variety of topics including the river and its notorious sand bar, the different types of ship, whaling and world-wide commerce. I should have given it five stars if I had been able to identify my family's ships, but for that I imagine I will need to get a copy Dick Keys's Dictionary of Tyne Sailing Ships which costs much more than this excellent book.Royal Historical Society Annual Bibliography of British and Irish History: Publications of 2002 (RHS Annual Bibliographies)

I ordered and paid for this book with great expectations. A pity that I never got it and though I sent a complain to the vendor and Amazon, still I have no reply.
So sorry that I can't comment on it, but I wish somebody from Amazon would read this and do something about it!
